Well you can subtract €84 by taking off the 3 year warranty and replacing it with the standard 1 year.

You have to click customize and take away/add the things you dont want.

on some there is an option to pay €0.01 to NOT have norton installed
    IMHO money well spent !

Could someone take a look at this link >>>>>>>>> http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=ie&cs=iedhs1&l=en&oc=D12116&rbc=D12116&s=dhs&sbc=iedhsrsdimen_1100_2

I havent added anything onto it, everything is "price included" - yet it goes from 549 euros to 682

As a side note - is this a good deal? Seems to be good value. Its just for a basic home setup

    Thanks

Not really, it would be painfully slow to use. And completely incapable of playing any game at all, even the sims 2 would be too slow to be enjoyable.

    This one: http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=ie&cs=iedhs1&l=en&oc=D12117&rbc=D12117&s=dhs&sbc=iedhsrsdimen_1100_1
has twice as much ram, twice as big a hard drive and a DVD burner, for 80 euro more. Very much worth it. Still wouldn't be worth a toss for playing games though.

I disagree strongly about the computer being painfully slow to use. I have used photoshop on a machine with only 256mbs, and it worked ok (although I did add 512 to speed things up). 256 is fine for ordinary stuff. It is probably worth spending the extra €80 though.

If you are going to upgrade anything, upgrade the monitor to a 17". Cut the warranty down to 90 days (they still cover you for 12 months, but you must pay the carriage after 90 days).

The Sims 2 wont be playable (tried it on a Dimension 2400 for my sister before, However said game absolutely hammers a Radeon 9700 Pro when you have a lot of Sims on the screen.) If you are not playing games though it will be fine.

256mb is fine for ordinary stuff at first, but as people clog their PC up with crap it eventually becomes painful. Especially if they fill the hdd. 512mb is the minimum now and with ram being so cheap (256mb is about €25), its silly not to upgrade.

Also, dell load their PCs with a ridiculous amount of crap making 512 a necessity imho.

If you can get a GB of memory then go for it. It makes a world of difference and will mean you wont have to upgrade the machine for some time.

Here is a tip about dells site. Do up your machine and get as far as to place your order then put it on hold. Come back to it a day later and the price will have gone down. Seems to vary but will change the longer you leave it.

    I went from.
    - Full price.
    - 15% off.
    - 10% off delivery
    - Delivery free.

Thats over the course of 3-4 days (afair)

If you can afford it, the machine I linked is decent enough value. The pcworld machine there only has 80 gig harddrive, 256 megs of ram, no dvd burner, normal crt monitor.

i think my linked one was 160 gig, 512 megs, dvd burner, 15" tft.

No uninstall option on your PC then? ;)

Though I agree 512 is pretty much required. It will run on 256, even 128mb. But its won't be fun.

I dont have any dell machine ;)
I have, however worked on and set up plenty of them, to know that dells shipped OS is bloated with a ridiculous amount of stuff. Even after uninstalling most of the crap you dont need, its still got more processes than a fresh install of XP. I have 23processes here. A brand new Dell inspiron came out of the box with about 50 processes I think.
I've run XP on 256mb on an old machine - it's definately possible, but you basically have to keep the installations to a minimum - office/firefox&email client.
