    Depends on what you want the laptop for:

    What model was the graphics card?

    www.microaid.ie
    Acer Aspire 3002LC AMD Sempron 2800+ (25W), Microsoft½ Windows½ XP Home Edition, 256MB DDR, 60GB, CDRW-DVD Combo, 64MB Shared VGA, 15inch XGA TFT, Modem, LAN, MS-Work €700

    Upgrade the ram yourself for about €30.

    OR:
    http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=3S55&CategorySelectedId=11105&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11105,4294963788
    HP nx6110 Celeron-M 360 256MB 40GB DVD/CDRW XP Pro - used (but only tatty box) - £388 incl vat (about €600)
    Add another 256mb from www.shop4memory.com for €32

    Thats a pretty cheap laptop ;)

    {snip}

    I saw that in the paper today myself, and being in the market went and bought one (with no thanks to PCWorld who initially told me they had none in stock - it was only when I did the -> Currys -> Dixons route that I got someone to check the computer and guess what - they had them in stock in PCWorld (mongs)).

    Personally I think its a pretty good deal for e700. The Sempron 2800+ 'aint going the set the world alight or anything - but its not a bad offering in a low end laptop either. I would guess it would be equivalent somewhere between the old Athlon XP 2000+ and 2400+. The chip does have the added bonus of Power Now (will throttle down to 800mhz), SSE3 and DEP. Decent enough spec., good screen - 512MB RAM, built in 802.11b/g.

    The ad was misleading as the graphics are not what were advertised - basically its (up to 128MB) shared memory (they quoted a different ATI chipset I think). Immediately I turned this down to the lowest, atleast the impact isn't as bad as on XP 256mb systems. Disappointing, but a no no for gamers. I'd guess you're talking approx. a 2hr battery - haven't run it fully yet.

    Ultimately (as commited said) it depends what you want the laptop for. You could probably spend another e300 and not get anything much better - maybe e400 and you'd get what you want - it all depends.

    I think what is amazing is that if you compare this laptop to what was available around a year ago (VIA 1ghz, 256mb, 20gb) at a similar price - it is IMO streets ahead. Definitely a good general purpose laptop.

    D.
