Ok, he was a great footballer (this thread isn't about football!) but there has been a bit of a proliferation of 'George Best-True Legend' and other such sigs/avatars appearing on forums in the past week or so. I think they're tacky and a bit redundant, ie, we all know he was a great footballer, so no need to tell us all in yer sig pal! Anyone agree, or do you think these sigs/avatars are just fine and I need to get out more?

Well there were a lot of Dimebag Darrel sigs as well. There's still some.
I think it's alright, if people want to pay tribute to him.

Is signing a book of condolences tacky? People, myself included obviously, are just expressing their feelings regarding the passing of one of the worlds greateest footballers. That said people are entitled to their opinion and if they think its tacky then so be it.

I suppose sending flowers to a funeral is a bit tacky too?

I'm glad he's finally buried, theres' been something of the Diana effect about the reaction to his death. Suddenly people who would have scoffed and tutted at his tabloid life decided he was practically a 'sainted' figure. No doubt his plot will become a shrine ending up a tourist landmark rather than a resting place.

    Mike.

But sending flowers to a funeral is usually something you do when you personally know the deceased or their family, no?

Best was a great footballer in his day, but he had another side too, people should remember that and not airbrush history and as Mike says, somehow sanctifty or even 'beatify' him, as he had more faults than just alcoholism. The 'Diana' effect was to be expected I suppose, I thought an awful lot of the sentimentality surrounding her funeral was 'tacky' too, so maybe it's just me. No offence to anyone ho wants a bestie sig btw.

When someone dies, people generally just remember the good things about them. This is true for nearly everyone, not just footballers-turned alcoholics.
