New driving examiners being "recruited"

Was talking to a friend of ours who works at the Dept. of Agriculture yesterday, and she told us that a memo had come around her department asking if anyone was interested in training as a driving examiner for a one-off 18 month contract. Apparently they have to first go through a driving test (fair enough), then a competitive interview (also fair enough), but here's the thing ... a 6 (yes 6!) week training course. After that they're let loose on the general public.

Now, all this is presumably designed to get rid of the current backlog, but how on earth can you expect to pick someone off the street, give them a mere six weeks training and then expect them to have the necessary skills to not only evaluate someone's driving skills correctly, but also to react properly if they do something potentially dangerous. I'd have thought that the minimum requirement to be a driving examiner would be several years practical experience as a driving instructor, plus an advanced driving qualification from the IAM or similar, but no, it appears our vast army of multi-skilled Civil Servants can be retrained in a jiffy to take on any task!

Are the surplus Agriculture staff in the the same locations as the backlogs?

I think this also had something to do with finding something for staff who didn't want to be decentralised away from Dublin to Portlaoise (?), so most of the potential candidates would be from the Dublin area. I think they were to be given a choice of location where possible feasible.

A full licence, but no training, proficiency test, qualifications or experience, as are required in civilised countries

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.
