Ok so I posted a joke about someone on his website message boards. Is there any way he can trace me? Can he get my IP address and find out where I live?

ok but what if he finds out my ISP and then talks to the ISP, could they give him my address? I know they wouldn't even if they could, but could they?

ISP wont care about what? Ok if I had a mate working for Eircom, and I had someone's IP address, could he tell me who they are?

Only if they have a static IP address. Or if the IP addr hasn't been changed. They have the ability to see who has an IP addr at the minute.

It would be difficult. Assuming you are using dynamic IP addressing everytime you go online, they'd have to check their logs to see what phone line was using that IP at a specified time. I would imagine it would take a court order or something like that to go into those specifics!!

You only get a new IP addr if the PPPoE session is interrupted. I.e. turn off your ADSL equipment... And no they don't need a court order.

There's no way they'd give those details out for something like that. Even if he knew someone there who found out for him, that employee would seriously be in line for a firing!

muahaha, hes going to find out and hack your ass! Seriously though they ISP couldnt give a toss and i doubt would give out your details :)

I'm pretty sure they do, revealing personal information from computer systems is a pretty serious crime these days, and rightfully so.

Yes, I think he was just being negative for the sake of it.

fischerspooner: I wouldn't worry about it. Worst case scenario it was your friend using your account having a laugh!! Blame it on Tom :)

I wasn't being negative... Someone said that if a friend was there they would be able to get the info.. and yes they could. Why would the friend need a court order to look up info that was already available to him? Maybe the court order thing was mentioned for the ISP giving out info. And yeah thats definitely true(in some circumstances).

Sorry if I got my wires crossed!

It depends a lot on the person tracking you. An IP address will give you an ISP and probably a general location. If they have contacts they can trace you to your house. For example Eircom dialups are linked to a physical phone number (DSL would be as well regardless if your dynamic ip or not)

You also leave footprints in other stuff you have written on the net. So even researching your history might get more information. Two such incidents on boards was someone scammed out of a phone (afair) they got the persons name, numbers, address and pictures of what they looked like via boards. The other incident was [wiki]Nas[/wiki].

under the data protection act they aint allow give any infomation out to anyone about you..the only way they can is if the case goes to court and the judge demands it..but this only happens with people who distibute large amounts of music films etc illegaly

Talk to your ISP and find out their privacy policy and the terms and conditions the service. Those will have more information on what the ISP can and can't do.
