Broadband help

    Hello all,

Wondering if you can help me with a games related problem. I recently had wireless broadband installed via Cellcom who are the only providers in Moycullen, Co.Galway. As I understand it, they are drawing their signal from Irish broadband. It's 512 each way with a contention ratio of 20:1. I am quite happy with the service and browsing is fine.

When I try to game however, the multiplayer interface informs me that it has found 4000 odd servers (CoD2) but nothing ever appears in the menu. I have tried disabling my own firewall, windows firewall is already disabled. Irish broadband do not block ports and cellcom inform me that there should be no problem on their end. There are no router problems.

I downloaded Xfire and sometimes it will pick up on UK servers with good ping (50) but when I try to connect I just get "awaiting connection" for ages. I am totally frustrated by this and would be indebted to anyone who could offer a solution,

    All the best,

    Bemused

Wireless isn't the best for gaming but the pings your getting in xfire are odd.... Do you know if Cellcom have their interleaving set to high?

Yep, thats probably it. Call of Duty needs a port opened.

Could be.... But all the games? Is s/he likely to have such a range of blocked ports...

Just to be clear, and I may have accidentally misinformed, my wireless modem is on the roof. This is connected to a network adapter and then from there into my PC. I recently installed a DI-524 router so that I can have wireless access throughout the house for my laptop.

I have directed the router to open the port appropriate to CoD2 BUT I was having this problem BEFORE I installed the router so I don't think it is the issue.

Am trying now - thanks for your help/time

Ok, tried that - in fact I had already performed all steps except for fixing my IP address - that done I tried again but it has not solved the problem.

Can you telnet a COD2 server and port? Im not sure it will work... or even if it will give you any meaningful data... its what I would try though...

Well thanks anyway - just to be clear again, I do not see the servers through the in game interface. It tells me it is detecting them but does not display any in the drop down list - see attached file after quick refresh. Xfire, for whatever reason does see some servers but I still cannot join

Forgive my ignorance Archytas, but do you mean "can I ping a CoD2 server"? If so, then yes, based on the ips listed in Xfire.

Ping wont communicate to a certain port... So ur just sending icmp packets... which most ip address reply to. try telnet ip_of_server:COD2_port

But as I said it might not give any relevant data...

bemused, i reckon the problem is with a software firewall on your pc. try uninstalling them completely as the d-link firewall will provide good protection without interfering with other software on your PC. You'll still have to open the ports for gaming etc on the D-link.

did you set the private ip in the d-link port forwarding menu to the same as your PC?

    Silver Lining,

But what would be the point in uninstalling the firewall when I have tried playing with it disabled anyway - same difference no?

maybe not, the norton firewall is unecessary now so you may as well remove it. It might still be interfering.
