Anti-Hacker Software

What's the best anti-hacker software for wireless users? Especially something that will keep the government snoops out. And if you cannot keep the super hackers out, is there a piece of software that will tell you when they are hacking into your system while you are on wireless?

Turn the stick around and grab the other end, you're currently holding the wrong one.

There is no one magic piece of software that will secure your network (like there is no one magic pill that will cure your dillusions :D). Your best approach is to simply ensure that you have a proper system of checks, like a good firewall, and proper strong encryption with a strong password.

    What hardware are you using?

Hardware? Toshiba Satellite. Operating system: XP (with all the updates).

No, I mean your wireless router.

I am in a free WiFi Hotspot. They said their wireless router is a Linksys (Division of Cisco). It is not password protected, and I doubt it's encrypted.

if you could connect without a password then the WiFi link is not encrypted. To stop eavesdropping you would need a VPN or stick to HTTPS:// stites,, also you can't tell if someone is just listening unless they do something really stupid.

Why do you want to keep the Government Snoops out ? You must be guilty. :v:

Oh as for using the word HACKERS bad choice, because the more secure OS's were written by Hackers. Also the insecure encryption schemes have been revealed by them. Generally speaking hackers are more interested in the technology than your personal data.

Crackers on the other hand are who you fear.

Crackers and hackers...Thanks for the clarification. I am just a user and not very skilled.

Government snoops? I have friends from around the world. When they chat about things happening where there is a lot of hot sand and sand dunes, we worry about creating a file with the government snoops who report to King George II in the States. You would be amazed on how you can get hassled by them when you visit, after having only innocently chatted with one of those sandy people. We are not talking sympathy for people who hate King George II, just freedom of speech and asking what is happening in the land of hot sand.

If you're concerned about security, use encryption, like GnuPG. If you're concerned about people breaking into your computer don't use Windows on the internet.

While your fears about security are well founded, I think you are a little too paranoid and not fully clear on what is/is not possible.

As the previous posters have said, basic security should encompass a firewall and anti-virus software. Believe me, you have more to worry about from viruses (virii?), ad-ware and spyware than US government agencies.

If you are paranoid about what you are saying being intercepted, then read up on encryption. PGP, or GnuPG are two free products that will ensure nobody can read your e-mails to another person, or messages destined for you. Remember that anything you post on the web (such as here on Boards.ie) is prone to interception unless it is encrypted.

Oh, don't forget to line your baseball cap with tinfoil so they can't read your thoughts. :D

Hmm, this is certainly a worrying development :: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/11/11/tinfoil_hats_as_government_plot/

It's amusing that you should comment about the other thread I posted mislabeled "wardriving" about the same time. It continues to rage with much debate, passion, and, sometimes meaningful content. Retorts are sometimes thrown with such energy as to resemble projectiles hurled at opponents.

I am a threatre arts major, and, as you may have surmised, in no way qualified to engage some of the more knowledgeable, skilled, and experienced contributors to these threads.

Should I be honest? I initiated these two threads in hope that one would take-off and provide me with both insight and content for a script I write for the stage. I hope to transform a piece of the virtual to the real, then dramatize it on the stage to an audience who still appreciates the old forms of art (theatre).

The anonymous identities of contributors adds mystery to the dimensions of human communication launched with the Internet (a relatively new event in human history). Are these people real, or just virtual characters created to fulfill whatever needs of the real people behind them? Then again, who am I to speak of this...I am, after all, a taibhse.

Read up on Tor and SSH tunneling if you're serious about keeping your net access away from prying eyes.

I like Science Fiction ( technology without paranormal ) and I like Fantasy, but I detest "Science Fantasy". In much the same way I love the film Hackers but have little time for junk like "The Net" where people have more or less magical powers even if you allow for plot device simplifications. Stuff like the Force in Star Wars ( and similar in Dune from which it was [strike]copied[/strike] inspired by ) is fine because they obey rules (and besides they are aliens :D) but stuff like Asimov's Laws of Robotics really annoy me.

In other words unless you understand the technology, you can't pretend you do and get away with it c.f. Dan Browne and compare it to the way Umberto Eco depicted the Monastry in The Name Of The Rose. ( Or the conspiracy theorys in Facults Pendelum (SP) ) Dan has sold a lot of trip but it ain't literature.

Best to get a techie to give the once over in case there are blindingly obvious holes in the tech stuff.

Great advice. Agree. Not in a hurry. Know any techie's that might be interested in reviewing script someday in the near future? Several weeks out and in early draft stages at present. Can't make them rich, as I'm a starving student of theatre. But can give credit.

The "Wardriving" thread got 110 posts before it was closed down by the mod. Such content...energy...passion. Great for scripts. Tried posting this on tcdsu and ucdsu (before the hack...or cracker), and did not get much. Boards.ie is a great place for dialogue.
