It is my sisters Dell laptop and she started off with a 1-2 hour easy battery time, and now suddenly she is only getting 17mins, it is 2 years old, but it only losts that long, with all major proccesses disabled, wireless turned off, brightness down very low and while not using optical drive,

any ideas why it has gotten so low?

Laptop batteries are like mobile phone batteries..they die eventually..one of the pitfalls of buying a laptop I'm afraid

You can buy loads of batteries like that on eBay ;)

have a look in the laptops forum - someone there may know where to get another battery.

What really kills the batteries is using it on AC power. The battery is constantly charging. You should unplug it once it charged. Its criminal that there isn't a switch for this.

I must disagree with you on the eBay comment!

2 years ago I bought 2 batteries for my then aging laptop.
After 3 months of usage one of them died and 2 months later the second one died.

If you get them from eBay you are taking a big chance as most of those batteries will be almost dead themselves and will probable only live long enough for the seller to escape with your money!

The Original Poster claimed to have a nearly dead battery and I was just pointing out that you can get any number of nearly dead battries on eBay.

RTBM - this depends on the manufacuter. Constant overcharging will kill most batteries except those with a proper intelligent controller which some laptops have. The manual will tell you whether you can leave the battery in all the time (most toshiba's) or not. Partitial discharges would counter this.

But in general it's good to completely discharge the battery once in a while.

Lithium batteries (most laptops) are supposed to live longest when stored at 40% charge in a sealed waterproof plastic bag in the fridge (not freezer). But I'd rather use them like a UPS in case.
