Just a quick question people. Everytime my girlfriend wants to get a prescription for the pill she has to shell out €50 to the doctor. Is this always the case? It seems expensive when she simple wants a new prescription. She's not going in for a consultation or with any queries. It just takes a short while.
    Is this the norm?

yeah, its for the gp visit, not for the prescription though The price will vary from area to area according to the gp. If she is in college, she will be entitled to free visits..sometimes a doctor will leave it out in reception for you, but thats a bit scabby..or sometimes a doctor will give you prescriptions for longer periods like 6 months to a year, however if you are on this type of medication you should get regular check ups for blood preassure etc

I think it can depend on the surgery. I know when I want to get a repeat prescription for the contraceptive injection i just ring up my doctors and they leave it at reception, then I go to see the practice nurse to get the shot so I don't actually see the doctor and don't pay the full consultation fee. As far as I know they do this for all repeat prescriptions they issue, apart from every few months when they want to do a check-up to make sure everything's still ok etc. She could enquire about this? Mine is a very busy city centre practice so they probably just do it to save time.

Just ring up and ask for a repeat prescription.

She may have to go for a check up every now and again, but not everytime.

AFAIK it is recommended that you have at least a yearly check-up when on the pill - counterindicated if you've high blood pressure so they need to check you out (also look for sudden weight loss/gain), but you should be able to get 6 monthly perscription. Probably no harm to have a check up every 6 months anyway.

wouldn't be boasting about this tbh - not exactly legal for pharmacists to supply drugs without perscription.

My girlfriend pays about 8 euro each time. Then 40 for a check up every few months.

50 each time sounds really steep.

unless theres a check up dont pay for a repeat prescription, tell the greedy gp that you will change surgery if he continues to charge for writting a repeat prescription(ten seconds work), most gp's wont charge for a repeat prescription so go elsewhere if he doesnt agree to free or low cost repeat prescription tell him you cant afford it,they are ethically obliged to provide healthcare to a person even if they cant afford it.

If you can't afford it they'll just send you to your local free health centre

Thanks folks for all the good advice. The last two times she wrote prescriptions for three months, but the GP has now extended this to 6 months which is grand. We were asking for a repeat prescription, but the GP wasn't the best as far as I was concerned. It's close to work for us both though.

    Many thanks.
