Soaking old fireplace tiles

My fireplace has gradually given up many of its tiles and somebody's coming to re-tile it. He said to soak the tiles that have come away in water for a few days to get them to give up the plaster that's stuck in them more easily.

Do I need to add anything to the water or anything?
