Ok it's been said a load of times already, but yet again praise for Gunn's on Wexford St! Finally bit the bullet yesterday and went dslr, picked up a nikon D50 with an 18-55mm & 70-300mm. Have to say I've never had such a pleasurable shopping experience, as well as loads of helpful advice, explained without the patronising tones I've previously experienced in some (not all) camera places when I admited my shameful secret of being a newbie to real photography! As to price, for what I got including a 1GB SD, camera bag (came with the camera), polarising filters for both lenses (thrown in free), the cheapest I could find online in Europe was €150 cheaper from Pixmania not including delivery charges and with a manual helpfully printed in French, not to mention their much criticised customer service. The states apart from the obvious vat snag was not a lot cheaper either (Adorama one of the more reputable stores I think came to just €150 cheaper without SD or shipping & vat), unless of course you wanted to risk one of the "bait & switch" stores with impossibily low prices designed to sucker you in which seem to proliferate over there. So in the end the obvious choice was a retail store I could walk into, talk to a real person, test and hold what I wanted to buy, buy it and have it the same day and all for a price that is very competitive even with online stores! Have to say this is a new experience for me, buying in a retail store here and not coming away with the sense you've been ripped, and the best customer service I've ever experienced :) . So CG (you know who you are ;) ), thank you yet again and be prepared for the next time I'm in with a fresh barrage of questions :p

I have known the Gunns since the 80s, though since I stopped working in Dublin I have not met them for a few years. They have always been so helpful and sincere. They also have a genuine love for the hobby of photography (and train sets) and have always been supportive of students and the local camera clubs. It's great that they are still on the go and, by the sounds of the feedback here, thriving.

If you are in again tell them Danny in Trim sends his regards and will call in soon.

Called up there yesterday myself, what a good shop and you couldn't meet nicer people running one. I told them they had a good reputation on the interweb and they said it's because they're not really sales people or pushy, very true.

I think this is where I'll be buying some stuff soon.

Unfortunately, no matter how nice they are, and how decent their prices are, they will always be beaten by the internet.

I guess that depends on your criteria for winning. Even then you're unlikely to be correct in all cases.

think that applies to any retail business really, you'll always find it cheaper somewhere on the net. As long as you're fine with potential delays, out of stock issues, and know exactly what you need then go for it. Versus the minimal cash savings in this instance though I think the personal service and unbiased good advice of a face to face transaction cannot be beaten. Plus the obvious comeback benefit as well as walking out of the shop with your purchase in your hands ;)

yea, that's true. If i had the extra cash, i'd make a point of buying from them, but being a student and into photography just doesnt mix! Although, i'm off to New York after Christmas, so i'll be paying a visit to b&h to get my hands on a nice Tamron 28-75.
