Saturday's Thoughts

Today's racing should probably come with a health warning with testing conditions everywhere, expect to see quite a few big priced winners, my advice is to look for horses proven on Soft or Heavy ground and that have ran well over distances further than they run today.

Anyway here's my bets for the day.

    12:55 Sandown - Green Iceni

Was second in a hot handicap to the well handicapped Not Left Yet at Cheltenham and should handle today's conditions. Prior to the cheltenham race he finished in front of Alph who reopposes today at Stratford, Alph has won since to frank the form.

    1:30 Sandown - Nor'Nor'East

Making his handicap debut off what looks a decent mark. Has only the 3 runs so is sure to still be improving. He has already won on soft ground and has McCoy in the saddle today.

3:10 Sandown - Cherub, Verasi (both each way)

At first look at this race Cherub doesn't immediately jump out at you but upon further inspection he has an excellent record on soft ground, he has never been out of the first 3 in 3 attempts on soft or heavy ground over hurdles. At 20/1 he looks to be decent value to at least place. I also like the look of Verasi at around the 12/1 mark who has already won over course and distance on testing ground.

    12:40 Wetherby - Aston Lad

With concerns over a lot of the field on the soft ground Aston Lad stands out as the one who has proven his stamina and his ability to handle the ground. He was doing all his best work at the finish last time out to just barely get up so the extra distance should be ideal. Keith Mercer takes a very useful 3lb off today.

    2:50 Wetherby - McKevely

McKevely has gone from strength to strength this season and will love the testing conditions today. He destroyed a half decent field last time out at Wetherby and looks to be still improving. If this was a handicap he would be giving a lot of weight away so he is well in on todays weights.

    2:10 Chepstow - Amber Starlight

In a 3 mile hurdle on heavy ground you can be sure than not too many will finish this, it may pay to side with Amber Starlight who runs off a very light weight which may be the difference in a race that will have a lot of tired horses finishing. He put up a career best effort over 3 miles on heavy ground at Lingfield last time out so I will be very surprised if he is not involved in the finish.

So what will the rest of ye' be backing?

5/2f in a 19-runner handicap isn't usually a standout price but I think Feathard Lady has a good few pounds in hand in the 2:55 at Fairyhouse.

good analysis of the race - Alph looked to have it won before the last. Green Iceni finished very well. Backed it before I saw your selections !

    Lady Gregory

will be a short price but I have been told it will not be beaten. There will be loads of money for this - John Oxx doesn't send horses over to Wolverhampton for the craic at this time of year !

Just going back to this, MasterK is a perfect example of what happens if you study racing properly. If you take the time, and have the correct discipline, with a little betting bank, you can actually make money out of this game.

    Superb post mate.

I backed 5 horses today Kauto Star, Victram, Racing Demon (I horse I've backed everytime it's ran, Le Volfoni and...and this is the killer...Miko De Beauchene...I've backed Nor Nor East in his bumper and he was a stand out today, I even picked him for a competition I entered, but...for reasons that elude me and I probably don't deserve to win money after this, I went against him at the last minute...put off by the drifting maybe.

A good day of racing though all in all.

And if anyone missed the last race at Sandown today you gotta see the replay....an absolutely amazing end to the race.

The last race was something else alright, I had Brave spirit. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it, did you hear the crowd? They were going mental.

As for my selections today, they went pretty well with Green Iceni and Nor'Nor'East both winning at 4/1. I couldn't believe Verasi and Cherub coming first and second the forecast paid 190/1.

The one sickener of the day was McKevely, I had by far my biggest bet of the day and though the was as close to a certainty as you can get, he looked to have the race won when he fell.
