Performance problems after installing new hardware...

Upgraded some bits on the pc...

    7800GT
    1GB Dual Channel DDR RAM
    A8N-SLI Deluxe Mobo
    AMD 64 3200+ CPU

Trying to play special forces with all settings on high and anti aliasing on is a nightmare. Laggy as bejaysis is an understatement.

Should I be getting high settings with this rig?

    Update -
Just tested it at medium settings and still running crap.
Methinks something is wrong with the new hardware setup...

Does it start accessing the hard drive a lot?

I've heard you need around 2gigs of ram to run on high with AA.

SF is a frigging night mare mate - I've had to turn loads of settings down to medium and AA off completely to get it to run anyway decent at all (and I still can't play on any servers with more thn 32 players) and it's not my rigs fault -

You could try rebuilding your shaders though, if you added the new hardwear after installing BF2:SF

Can you run Vanilla BF2 at all high settings and AA on?

I re-installed windows after the mobo installation so I had to re-install BF2 as well...

I've a different system to you but i could play BF2 with everything high except texture @ medium with 4 X aa and play 64 player servers perfectly

Where did you get that software that shows you where your comp scores? Sorry for being off-topic but I would like to get my hands on it. :)

Possibly a drivers issue? Got the latest ones?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,346 ✭✭✭✭KdjaCL

    Got all the drivers?
Assume its a new windows install with all that hardware.

    Directx9c Via4in1 etc:

    Correctamundo....

Now, just to make sure I've done the neccesary...
I'm going to the nvidia web page for drivers, 3 boxs to choose things in, I choose video drivers, then Geforce and TNT, then Windows 2000/XP... Is this right?

I was thinking about updating the chipset and bios, but my floppy drive is caput so I cannee do that until I borrow one of a mate.

With my current rig I should be able to max out everything.
I looking on that forum that was posted earlier and people with lesser hardware to mine are ruinning everything on high like a dream...

Have you tried running any other games?

Lol, that graphics card is so good your cpu is letting it down. Try turning down the textures and leave everything else on high. Or try overclocking your procceser up about 400mhz

Abit have FlashMenu possibly the coolest thing ever designed for flashing bioses, it works in windows :D

Head to the Abit site, you probably have your aperture in bios set to 32mb or somfin default like (should be double your vid card mem).

But the main thing is you should be whacking out high res with super fps.

    Its an ASUS mobo...

Another thing is when I tried updating to service pack 2 I get a STOP: 0X0000007F error when windows loads... Related? I wonder...

Have you tried running any other games?

    Installed F.E.A.R last night.
Maxed out all settings, its lagging as in it stops dead for about 5 seconds every 10 seconds or so...

Running Nvidia System tune now, an app that came with the card.
I'm letting the app auto tune my system for "Best System Performance"...
I'll report back later to tell you if my machine has gone up in smoke or if the situation has improved...

Update - Well, I can safely say that the only 2 words that come to mind after running that nvidia thing is Tits and up...

Formatted my hd and reinstalled windows from scractch...

I hate to say this but are both your memory modules in properly. Have you got the full 1 gig. And are they in the corresponding channels,ie not right beside each other. When I lost a stick of ram, Fear ran the same as you desribe.

Lads, thanks for all your help but I have sorted it...
Formatting the hd and doing a completely new install of windows has sorted it... Running like a dream in singleplayer with everything on max, aax4 etc...

Now time to try FEAR, I need a nappy first though, frightened the crap out of me last night...

Update - FEAR is running fine... Stone the crows BF2 though, when I try to play online it lags again, but on singleplayer its fine... me wonders...

    whats your BB solution?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,093 ✭✭✭Static M.e.

Yeah FEAR scares the bejesus out of me too, the little girl is freaking me out I keep expecting to see her strolling down one of the halls in the house ..

Anyway back to BF2, I get serious lag issues too sometimes . I use the EA UK bf 17 server alot now and its works grand most of the time. I also switched from wireless to cable. Some suggestions I picked up from random spots were

"Changing your shadow and lighting settings to minimal first is going to have the biggest impact on your FPS setup. Shadows? I mean really. I have played almost 60 hours of SF on a 64 man server and there is so many bullets, grenades, flashbangs etc. going on, I don't really think your going to miss high detail shadows"

"Defrag the entire drive, make sure you have the latest graphics card drivers and BF2 patches, check to make sure you aren't under seige by Spyware or viruses, free up some space (Delete some porn / random unused ****e) and try it again. "

    Might help, GL

    Eircom, 2mb down...
Its not online lag though, I could play on 64 man servers before I updated my rig with the new stuff...
Found a tweak guide online yesterday, didnt have a chance to try any of the stuff out though.. Will keep you informed as to how I get on...
