Thinking of travelling to South and Central America at some stage. Just about to start new job, so it will take a while to save up.

But how long should be spent in South America to really appreciate it? Thinking of doing the Inca trail ( definately the long trek option) and visiting places like Cuzco, Rio, Patagonia, San Jose and Havana.

I dont know about South America, but you could spends weeks in Central america there is so much to see. You would want to spend at least a week in Costa Rica to appreciate it. Belieze you could do in a couple of days but the cayes are so beautiful (not to mention cheap) you will be tempted to stay longer. Guatamala is also very cheap and you have to visit Tikal.

Havana (I presume you are talking about Cuba) is not in South America - its in the Caribbean and a day or two would be plenty. If you are going to explore more of cuba you will need at least a week. Its a beautiful country and well worth the visit before castro dies and the americans start flooding back in with their mcdonalds and advertising.

I'm so jealous of your travel plans :D

We spent three months in central america (mexico, belize, honduras, nicaragua, costa rica) and then three months in S.america (peru, chile, argentina) and it wasnt near enough time for s.america.

We met loads of people who spent a year in south america and just about covered it from top to bottom. Central america is much much smaller travelwise. for example, in s.america its big big distances, 18 hour buses to get across from bariloche to buenos aires.

Time wise, you could spend a ton of time, it depends how much you want to see, what you want to do.

What about working/travelling over there? I'm assuming tefl would be the best bet in one of the bigger cities like Buenos Aires?

The South America forum on lonelyplanet.com would be a good place to start planning your trip.

The first bit of advice I'd give is book with www.airmadrid.com for 300euro one way tickets from Madrid to anywhere in Latin America and a similar price in dollars on the return.

As a general rule of thumb $20 per day should be enough with roughly $50 on top for the major tourist sites. In answer to your direct question you could spend 3 months for both Central and South america if you have a high budget and are selective; you could alternatively spend years down there if you teach english or join an NGO programme.

If you search back into October and Septemebrs threads there are some good threads on Peru, Bolivia and Chile. I would recommend avoiding Columbia and Venezuela due to the current security situation.
