College Catering Outlets

In light of SU Council discussions on restricting college catering and opening more JCR's  , I was wondering what people's views on the existing outlets are.

Personally, I prefer the Dining Hall, because the staff are very friendly, they make the best sandwiches, and the ambience is better than somewhere like the Buttery.

There really ought not to be more JCR's, because the ingredients they use are, in my opinion, absolutely disgusting. How their ham ever came from a pig is beyond me.

I alsways had a great grá for the Dining Hall in 1st year, because it was a little more welcoming than the hospital canteen that is the Buttery. The food seems to be better, even if it's not!

The Ham café is scary...am not sure if they still do it, but for many years, they cooked the food in the Buttery complex and drove it down to sit under a hot lamp. Eeugh. But it's actually a nice enough spot to sit and drink tea.

Never spent a huge amount of time in the JCR, until I was an SU officer and had a certain obligation to do so ;) and I liked it, although dead pigs and whole hogs do nothing for me. Back room, which came on stream during my term of office, although I didn't have anything to do with it, is lovely.

Arts block coffee dock - a great escape from the library, and a steady place to retire to when I worked in the Lecky in the mornings, despite living 5 minutes away on campus (oh, but such a cold five minutes walk ;) ).

Buttery was fantastic (well, in relative terms) for the first bit of 04/05, when they were responding to a survey, but fell apart again very quickly. Only been in a couple of times this year during my exile, but it didn't set my world on fire.

I'd talk about Commons, but I'll only get stuff thrown at me.

I've never really liked the bread that the JCR use. They seem to use the cheapest ingredients possible without that much of a price drop from the shops around.

I really don't understand why the food in the Buttery is as **** as it is. DCU, UCD, NUIM and DIT all have better food than us. It's unfair damnit!

Ah, so it's not just me that thinks that the staff are nicer in the Dining Hall than the Buttery. One of the cashiers in the Buttery is particularly unpleasant. Then upstairs in the Dining Hall they're so nice, especially the staff at the salad bar.

I also like that in the Dining Hall there's salad instead of the soggy vegetables.

Wow..for some reason I never knew students could eat in the dining hall (I thought you had to book it like commons or something). Shame, shame and disgrace.

What's the Westland Café or whatever it's called like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

It's ok. I only ever get tea and/or pizza there.

What kind of pizzas do they do in the Westland? Are there panini too?

Dunno about paninis but I think there's a fairly wide range of toppings. Fiver for a full pizza's pretty good too. Not sure what they are now though.

The food in the Hamilton café was wretched today. Awful stuff.
