Are they worth the trouble...?the other half is trying to get me to drive up some day next week to do some shopping.I just don't think its worth the trouble,I think its just an elaborate plan to get me to go on a long drive ( for any younger blokes reading this...woman are like that controlling, sneaky etc).

I have access to a Musgrave card and cant Imagen "up north" would be much cheaper than that

So is it worth it...?and if so what to buy and were to go.

crate of carlsberg - £12.99 and they give you 70p per euro so its a good rate (roughly about €18.50) for 24 full size cans. Thats cheap.

Also chocolates, ie roses etc.. are very cheap. Sainsburys in newry is the biggest selling sainsburys due to the shear amount of southerners heading up there.

Be warned though, if your going up at the weekend your going to hit traffic :)

sure at least you can bypass drogheda and dundalk, it cuts the time, for us as well, newry's only 20min, but then i dont actually live in the town, live near the motorway ;)

newry is a good bit cheaper, we do a good bit of shopping there, handy enough

And here was me thinking you weren't actually from dundalk :)

Tuesday should be fine for traffic.

Sainsbury's has cheap booze and food but also check out supervalue on Hillstreet for some good deals on beer etc..

I usually go to Enniskillen for my shopping (I'm from the Rep.), and find clothes to be cheaper up there, and of better style. Newry, been there too, buttercrane the quays, and tkmaxx you can't really go wrong.

Otherwise I heard Scotch Hall shopping centre has opened in Drogheda, dunno what it's like though.

if sainsburys in newry is sold out, try the one just outside lisburn. instead of turning right to go to newry, continue straight and ya just arrive at it!
    think they even do clothes!

    .

I find musgraves to be rippers!Sure tesco matchs them on spirits.

Booze is defintly cheaper in sainsburys,if your going up to stock up for all your xmas booze then you'l definitly notice a saving. The worst thing is that it can be mental up there now with the run up to xmas

Trying to get parked at anytime of the week in the run up to xmas is a hit and miss affair, especially at the w/e; think of 3 circling cars vying for every one potential parking space at peak times and you're getting the idea.....also a horrible jam coming down the hill into Newry at peak times.

Cheap for drink and for some food prodcuts especially luxury chistmas type stuff (chocalate, sweets, biscuits etc).

To whoever mentioned Scoth Hall Drogheda, pay parking is a big turn off; something outrageous like 2.50 an hour for the first 2 hours then a fiver p/h after that....whatever happened to validated parking systems...?

if we go shopping we go round 8.30am so as to beat the crowds, but if your from dub, might be tough!!

Newry isn't really that far from Dublin, and the drive itself is fairly easy - motorway nearly all the way. I seem to remember I did it in just over 2 hours last time. At this time of the year you may want to leave Dublin at 6:30 to make sure you get parking though.
The prices weren't very different I found. Some things are cheaper, some more expensive. I hate shopping around for a bargain - it involves too much walking and work. I want someone to tell me - you need to go to the North for x and y, and get a and b in the Republic.
Even though people say drink is much cheaper, be careful. A lot of UK alcohol is lower (sometimes way lower) in alcohol than Irish. I got a 3% can of Heineken or Carlsberg last time. Also, instead of 500ml, their cans are 440ml.
I would recommend parking in Sainsburys, and doing the bulk of your food shopping there. Leave your car there and then go across the road to the Buttercrane centre and get your M&S stuff and have a look at the clothes etc.
Expect to save a *bit* of money, but not a lot.
