A friend lost all info from his hard drive yesterday, so I was wondering if anyone out there knows of a good, FREE data recovery programme?

    Thanks:D

    How do you mean lost?
    Is the disk physically fùcked?
If not do a google for easy recovery pro its been pretty usefull in the past

i don't know all the details, but i believe that the info that was on the disks (2 of them) has vanished. the disks are being read alright, suggesting they still function, but most of the info is gone. he was trying to sick in some extra ram, and boom - 100's of gigs gone. i don't know how this is possible for something like this to happen from a memory upgrade, but what do i know?

i'll pass on that info to him.

    thanks

As long as the drive(s) can be accessed at all and that data has not been overwritten in the meantime then GetDataBack from www.runtime.org has good success rates. There are two versions; one for FAT and one for NTFS. You run through the various scans and if the files are found they can be opened and saved one by one for free. To copy or restore the files in batches you must pay for the application.

It is recommended to run the application from a different partition that you want to recover the files from even if this means slaving the problem drive to another system.
