Basically its trying to boot off your hd. check boot sequence and make sure your CD is showing as a bootable option and set it boot as first, should'nt have to as the system should try and boot of the next drives.

Give your Cd a wipe(can you hear it spinning?), and fer the feck of it; switch off your hd as a bootable option(don't forget to turn it back on). Also do you have a 2 cd drives as in a cd drive and a burner, if so try putting the cd in the other one.

Check that you are not missing any prompts to "press any key" during startup in order to choose to boot to the CD and not to the HDD.

Just in case, check that you haven't got a floppy left in the drive... (assuming you have a floppy drive to begin with...)

You need to clear your MBR, Has happened to me a few times,

http://ffdisk.webaps.de/fdisk121.zip Download that << Put it on a floppy and make it a bootable floppy, Google how to do that and boot of the floppy and follow once that is done. Follow on screen instructions. You need to clear your MBR, I just thought I would warn you, after the MBR is deleted you will need to format the whole harddrive, All the data on it is useless after clearing MBR. Once the MBR is cleared, put back in your windows XP CD, and set CD-ROM back to 1st boot, And windows should start to install. Dont forget to set in BIOS " 1st boot - Floppy " to boot of the floppy. And for you people who think Floppys are never needed, This is where they are needed and the only way this problem can be solved is by using a floppy ;)

If you want to get back into your current installation then rather than clear/zero the mbr you could run fixmbr (and other stuff) from the WinXP Recovery Console once you can boot up the WinXP CD. If everything else has failed and this is a genuine original CD then I suggest trying SmartBootManager from http://btmgr.sourceforge.net/download.html

Add the two Files from: Binary DOS (sbminst.exe and its Support file cwsdpmi.exe) to a boot floppy. Boot to it and run sbminst to create a boot manager floppy diskette. After this you reboot to the floppy and with the CDROM in its drawer you can then choose to boot up the CD from the floppy's boot menu.
