Released on the DoJ website is their strategy statement for the next two years. Page 30 is of interest:
    FIREARMS AND EXPLOSIVES
We have responsibility for legislation and policy on the regulation and control of firearms and explosives. Recent years have witnessed an increase in criminal possession and use of firearms - our priority is to tackle that. We are working closely with An Garda Síochána to develop policies and legislation aimed at reducing the availability of illegal firearms. New legislation currently being prepared is aimed at strengthening the law in this area.
There has also been a significant increase in ownership of firearms for hunting and competitive target shooting in recent years. In parallel with this there has been increasing pressure from hunting and sporting representative bodies for reform of the firearms law. We will continue to liaise with these representative bodies in formulating new firearms control policies and legislation that will impact on the wider sport shooting community.
1.9 - FIREARMS AND EXPLOSIVES OBJECTIVE: To implement effective policies and laws to regulate and control firearms and explosives.
FIREARMS AND EXPLOSIVES PERFORMANCE INDICATOR: The introduction of a range of legislative measures to update the law on firearms and explosives
    which will address modern requirements.
    Our Commitments:
    Commitments

    • Continue to engage in regular contact with An Garda Síochána on the regulation and control of firearms. Consider advice from the Government Inspectors of Explosives. Engage in consultation with representative and interested bodies and consider their views.
    Performance Targets/Indicators

    • Maintain ongoing control of the manufacture of explosives and the importation, use and storage of firearms

Well now you have it from the horses mouth as to the order of priorities and where we stand in that order. "engage in regular contact"... "consider their views"... If anyone is surprised at the level of powers the Gardai have in the CJB, that little paragraph goes a long way to explaining it. I doubt very much, if anything we say at this point will carry any weight against "regular contact" with the Gardai. :(

Gotta lovwe the "consider their views" bit as well. I consider the views of many people each day,as we ll do.Doesnt mean we will ACT on them though.
