I'm planning on being in a ski resort somewhere
I know it's not a city but it's just an idea.

id love to go skiing but not for new years. were looking for a city with a huge celebration. if we had the money it would be sydney, but we dont so were trying to find a low budget european equivalent!

for the money we would spend on a night out here we could probably go away for a few nights for a few pound more. or even if anyone knows of a really good night planned in ireland.

Amsterdam is a happening place on NYE. I've been here for about 5 of them, always had a blast, especially if you're into fireworks, the displays are amazing.

If you can get flights the accomodation is good value

A group of us went to Barcelona for new years 2004/2005. It was excellent. The sun shined for the entire trip, and we got fabulous accomodation - it was an apartment with 3 bedrooms for about 100 euro each for 5 nights. Ryanair do cheap enough flights to both Reus and (another airport which I can't think of right now) - both about 1 hour from the city centre. I'd thoroughly recommend it. We went through this company to rent the apartment: http://www.bcninternet.com/ - you could probably get a good deal for a studio apartment...
