My mysterious pay pack

I just got paid for the first time in my new job. I got paid by cheque, whereas from now on, I will get paid through the bank.

The thing is, I found out on Friday (Pay day) they're with-holding my first weeks pay. Now, as I understand it, a back week happens, just to keep affairs in order, tax, setting up the bank etc. BUT... In my payslip, properly printed, it is writen in biro at the bottom
    €xxx - Total pay
    minus
    €xxx - 2cd weeks pay
    Equals
    €xxx withheld

Now my total pay in print is different from what I received. Can they legally do this? And (It's a high staff turnover business) If I left, they (theoretically) could say, "€xxx!!! Of course we paid that to you, look at our records, you must have wrote that in yourself!"
Highly improbable but it could happen.

Opinions please, I already abhor one aspect of this job and am starting to look for another :)

    Bring it up with HR.

Totally unfair, but as you mentioned that there is a high turnover, perhaps they use that to stop people from quitting before 3-6 months. For example, in a job I had a few years ago, I had to sign a contract saying that if I handed in my notice before a 3 month probation period, I was liable to hand back my first two week's pay (as I had been in training for a fortnight when I began).

Bring it up with HR - via email if you can. Mention that it was never brought up with you when your salary and terms of employment were discussed.

Try to refrain from the "I'm ringing Joe Duffy!!!1"-isms just yet ;)

If it's not in your contract, they can't do that.

But... you can decide whether to let it slip and try to create a career there, or cause fuss, piss of the HR people, and be ****ed when it comes to getting promoted.

It's not eircom technical support by any chance?

    no
    that sounds totally unprofessional
I work in a wages dept and I have never seen this been done, nor do I understand the reason, sounds very odd.
If you do not have a HR then go directly to the person who does the wages and ask them about it.
You are perfectly entitled to ask about your wage slip, I have people query their wages here at times, it's my job to answer any questions they may have.

btw - it could have something to do with emergency tax.... just a thought.
    Go ask.

    what? :/
asking a valid question regarding a wage slip has absolutely nothing to do with the above comment, I've never heard such rubbish.
