Dutch football has been rocked by the news that David Di Tommaso has died.

The FC Utrecht defender died in his sleep on Monday night, with reports suggesting that he had a heart attack.

The Frenchman, who had no history of heart problems, was voted Utrecht's Player of the Season by fans last year.

Di Tommaso, who was 26, started his career at Monaco before joining French second division club Sedan.

He moved to Utrecht in 2004, and was a transfer target for Premiership club Portsmouth this summer.

Terrible news:( The circumstances seem very reminiscent of the young GAA player Cormac McAnallan who died a couple of years ago.

Loads of stuff like this have happened and it seems only recent aswell. And I don't think it's happened to anyone over thirty. Very Tragic!

it is shocking how often we hear of athletes dying suddenly for no apparent reson. first i heard of it happening Marc-Vivien Foe of cameroon, then Cormac McAnallen and now Di Tommaso. im sure there have been many cases in the mean time.

people should really ask more questions tho. often we are told that the heart just stopped for no apparent reason. some people i have spoken to put it down to isotonic drinks and the supplements athletes use.

Yep it should definitely be investigated more, its too much of a mystery and its happening with more and more frequency..

The fact of the matter is athletes are being pushed to the edge of what the human body can do. Some are bound to go further then their body can go.

It's tragic and I think that the deaths have come from the introduction of such serious training regimes, strictly controlled diets, supplements, etc...

Unfortunately this thing is far more common than people think, and it's not just top athletes that are "pushing themselves to the limit".

Very sad thing for him and his family. RIP.

must be an ivestigation in to the exact causes of these deaths so we can try to stop them from happening. rip

Sad news, but i remember posts from the Foe thread when it happened.

Its no a widespread problem, or an epidemic. I'm sure there are also a number of ordinary 26 year old men who die from heart problems.

What im trying to say is there may not be a link between young sports professionals and sudden heart attacks.

Since the McAnallen tragedy Kilkenny do annual check-ups on their hurlers. This has resulted in two retirements in the last two years - one a guy in his mid 20s, the other a guy about 21. No exact details have been given of course, other than to say that high intensity sport could be dangerous to their health - neither have any history of health troubles and both feel perfectly fine - so its likely to be the same or similar to what McAnallen had.

It seems that regular health checks is the best preventative measure.
