Hi FOlks. Just got my BB sorted (no limits....hurrah...)and been ages since I used Bittorrents,
    Anyone recommend any good sites?

Also if if anyone has memberships to any closed groups my last ratio on Azuerus was well over 1.6

    Greatly appreciated

    Hehe.

Funky: The rule is this: You can ask questions about software configuration etc. and discuss anything legal if you like, but if it can be reasonably inferred that you're talking about warez and how to exchange them then you'll get a bit of a clip around the ear (usually a temp ban).

I'm guessing that you've learned your lesson, so we'll just drop it. :)

    copyrighted material torrents are illegal

however the discussion of bit torrent clients are not.

much like how to copy a cd is not illegal but
    copying a copyrighted cd are

Concensus among the mods is that discussion of backup of copyrighted material THAT YOU OWN is ok.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,396 ✭✭✭✭Karoma

..provided that you keep your copy safe, for personal use (Or can i accidently leave my backups Internet-accessible?) ? :p

I seem to be saying this all the time these days, but torrents of copyright material are not illegal. A torrent is simply a hash file containing the url of the tracker and some information about the seeders and leechers. Trackers are not illegal. Downloading copyright material is not illegal. Sharing copyright material is illegal.

I don't know why people keep saying otherwise. Please don't tell me you actually listen to the rubbish IRMA sprout? They consider drug dealing to be the same as downloading MP3s. They're total bull****ters.

Just because it isn't illegal doesnt mean that they don't make things very messy for websites which are seen to condone them. The lads are trying to run a discussion board, not filesharing forum for people who want to get warez. If you want file sharing info, you go here www.google.com or here www.slyck.com

There aint really any need for talk of it on boards.ie, I can completely see where the mods are coming from when they don't allow it.

Oh I have no problem with boards.ie having their own set of rules regarding this.

I only have an issue with misinformation regarding the legalities of torrents/etc.

Get todays edition of Metro. It has a list of torrent sites in it. Also tells which ones you can get your favourite TV shows. I wonder when they'll get sued for it:v:

And the joy of BitTorrent is that everyone who downloads, shares for the duration they are downloading, with the option to continue afterwards.

Factually incorrect - you do not have to upload whilst d'ling. Although your d'l rates will be rather sh*te, of course.

You'll always upload *some* amount of the file ;) , anyway only scumbags don't upload when they download from torrent sites.
If everybody acted like a scumbag nobody would be able to download anything and the whole bittorrent community would be dead

****!!! I e-mailed Metro last week explaining what BitTorrent technology is, how it works, and what the websites are. I told them about my torrent website (an Irish torrent search engine) and tried to give them a local angle on the story.

Now they've printed the story and haven't mentioned me or my site!!

    Annoying!!!!

    /me slaps Khannie ;)

    Herald != Metro

They're both freesheets but the difference is that Herald AM has just proved what I've said for years - I wouldn't read that rag even if it's free :D

The Metro isn't too bad actually.

Regarding the article - the funniest part in it was some bint from TV3 saying that TV episode downloads haven't hurt TV3 - "I've never even heard of Bittorrent"! Has she been living in a box?
