    Does anyone know of some free or cheap software that will allow me to repartition my Win2003 server machine WITHOUT loosing what's there already?

    I have Partition Magic 8 but this does not work on server OS.

    Any help would be appriciated.

    cant think of anything offhand.

    Are you using a RAID controller. I think your safest bet would be to make an image of the drive with acronis, resize partitions as needed and restore.

    There is a linux util called FIPS or something to that effect that might do it.

    in any event you will be wanting to make an image first!

    Thanx for the help. I'd rather a one step solution but will consider all ideas.
    I'm using a simple IDE single 40GB drive. Nothing fancy but I CANNOT lose the config I have on the primary partition.

    Acronis, $50 version, doesn't work for Win2k3 server. The €600 version does :). Slightly out of my reach.

    Google for ntfsresize, a linux app that you can run using knoppix as part of ntfsprogs.

    http://mlf.linux.rulez.org/mlf/ezaz/ntfsresize.html

    Suggest that you print out the entire page, including the section on what to do if windows doesn't boot, not running ntfsresize when the computer is hibernating, running chkdsk /f to fix errors before starting.

    Also imaging the drive would be a good idea, if you've a spare drive, or enough space on a local ftp server.

    Here are the steps how to resize NTFS:

    * Download the Knoppix ISO image.
    * Burn it to a CD or DVD.
    * Boot from the media and hit <ENTER> when you see the message "Boot:".
    * Click the "K" menu in the bottom left corner.
    * Click the "System" menu.
    * Click the "QTParted" which is a graphical, user friendly partition editor.
    * Select a disk.
    * Select the NTFS partition to be resized.
    * Right click with the mouse and choose Resize.
    * Set the new partition size.
    * Commit your changes in the File -> Commit menu.
    If your keyboard and mouse stop responding during resizing then please just be patient.
