Hey guys, here s the problem,
Dell laptop owned by a friend started displaying an Error 797 when she went to connect to the internet. Basically it cant detect the modem. Went to MS site and they said to check the driver.
Now went to device manager to see Nothing???
Checked Plug in and play in services and its on automatic? :(
    Running on XP SP2.
    Any thoughts?

If you go to Action, Scan for Hardware Changes, does that throw you anything up?

renable /start the Plug and Play service (via start -> Run -> services.msc) manually.
(And make sure it's set to Log On as a System Account)

[let us know how you get on. There is a registry fix (Below). As ever, don't edit the registry yadayadah unless ..know what you're doing..yadayadah.. you could always try an XP System Restore - it's more UI and might resolve both this and hte original issue..]

    Registry fix:
    Start -> Run -> Regedit
    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum
    Right-click on Enum
    Click on Permissions
Add full permissions to Everyone. (You may need to add Everyone)
    Click on the Advanced button.
Put a tick in both options at the bottom (Inherit from parent the permission entries... and Replace permission entries on all child or objects...).
    Exit and reboot.

For anyone else who experiance problem like this try http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1051715405
for a wide range of fixes. The one that finally worked for me was th swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe one that needs to be run in safe mode
