COD2 crashing

I recently bought COD2 and everything was going fine until near the end of the Pointe Du Hoc mission. Basically the game continually crashes, it also causes my machine to crash, forcing me to re-boot. Up to this point the games was running perfectly...can't understand it really! So far I have tried :-

sweeping my machine for spyware, viruses etc.
re-installing the game (keeping the save game files and profiles)
starting the game in safe mode

None of the above made any difference at all.

The game does not crash at exactly the same point every time, it will go a little bit further each time I reboot (around 30 secs or so).

My last option as far as I can see is to start fresh with a new profile, but to be honest I don't feel like doing this if I don't have to!

So basically, I was wondering if anyone else had this problem or if anyone had heard of this and could help me out?
