    Hi,

I'm, travelling to Cologne from Dublin on Thursday 1st December, but I had to fly to Dusseldorf. I need to get a train to Cologne when I land, and back to Dusseldorf on Sunday.

Does anyone have any information or links on the German rail service and their prices/timetables?

I also wanted to know things like the distance from the airport to train station in Dusseldorf, and the distance from the train station(s) in Cologne to my hotel ( http://www.tagungshotel.com/hotel_EN_1064571061.htm ).

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Hey, I live in Cologne and regularly fly back to Dublin via Dusseldorf. The train costs €8.50 each way into Cologne if you get one of the Regional trains, some cost €10 and some as much as €16. The trains are very regular (the most you will wait is about 30 minutes). There is an airport train station, so you can go direct to Cologne from there. You just have to get a monorail airport train (which is free) to the airport train station which takes about 5 minutes. For info on times go to www.bahn.de, you will be travelling from dusseldorf flughafen to koeln hbf.

Holzmarkt is fairly near the Hauptbahnof but there are no u-bahn lines that go directly between the two. You will need to get a train (Lines 19,18,17 or 16) to Apellhoff Platz which is about 2 stops away and then change to line 3 or 4 and go to Severin Strasse which I think is your nearest stop but I don't know exactly where your hotel is so you'll have to make sure of this yourself. The U-bahn should cost you about €1 since you're not travelling very far. There is an U-bahn station in the hauptbahnhof so you don't even need to go outside. A map of the U-bahn lines can be found here http://www.kvb-koeln.de/german/fahrplan/linienplan.html.

:( I miss the Weihnachtsmarkt. The one they put on at the German School in Dublin just doesnt quite cut it. But last week I went to Nottingham and they had a German Weihnachtsmarkt. It was funny because they had so many German products and some of them didnt bother translating them and I think business wasnt great for them.

Anyway, I enjoyed it big time!

Lidl und Aldi sind zwar jetzt hier und bieten einiges um die Weihnachtszeit aber es ist halt nicht das gleiche als wenn man ueber einen Weihnachtsmarkt geht.
