I have a Nokia phone and a bunch of those .3gp files. MPlayer can play them, but without sound. MPlayer has a sister project called mencoder, a media encoder. It might be able to transcode them, but it's a bitch to use.

I got one called "super" from download, it works ok and does sound but the files end up huge. The 650kb file ended up as a 4500kb mpeg. I suppose I have to trick about with the settings.

You can use the media player in Nokia PC suite which you can get here but the quality isn't very good. Just open the file you want to convert then click file -> save and save as a 3gp file.

If you have Nero, it does the best job. Use Nero Recode and recode your video files to mp4 for best results. There's a good guide here for converting videos with Nero Recode for the Sony Ericsson K750i.

Another one I used to use was Mpegable but it's not available anymore. I might have a copy of it I can send you if you want it.

    quicktime plays 3gp files.

In fact, the whole mac suite of video tools is very good at supporting both .3gp and .3g2 files - both encode and decode

I know you where looking for a free program but if you happen to have Nero Recode then here's a link to a very good tutorial, might be more aimed towards SE K750i's thou.
