Uh, I wouldn't say she's the greatest thing to happen to cinema in ten years but I will say I think she's gorgeous, especially so in "The Wedding Crashers" with her naturally dark hair.

    Who?

    I rest my case.

Well, when I read this thread I shrugged and thought to myself "Who"? So then I looked her up on imdb.com and I shrugged and thought to myself "Who?"

I can't say that she's ever been in anything noteworthy, so how does she constitute as the greatest thing to happen to cinema in the last 10 years? I can certainly think of many far, far more important things to happen in the big wide world of cinema over the last decade, but I won't get into that now.

You don't see to offer anything on why you think should we be the greatest such and such, so perhaps you could clue me in?

She plays the main bitch in "Mean Girls" and is the daughter of the Senator in "The Wedding Crashers" that Owen Wilson falls in love with. As far as I'm aware, she's been in nothing else of note, hence why I disagree she's the greatest thing to happen to cinema in ten years but she's big on the MTV teen scene (even though she's about 30!)..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 731 ✭✭✭Madge

She was in 'Red Eye' with Cillian Murphy aswell

Hence the OPs assertion, I guess...

Well I think it's obvious from imdb.com what she's been in, but of what importance whatsoever is she to cinema?

Though of course something else here is obvious, but I think I'll let the original poster speak for himself before I go throw around terms like sexually frustrated teenager. ;)

I think most dudes with girlfriends in here will know her (and Ryan Gosling) by name because they've been made to sit through The Notebook and they wanted to create a list of who needs to be punished for inflicting that cynical, saccharine drivel onto the world.

At least, that's how I know her.

And no, she's not all that great.

You know, maybe I'm just lucky, but I've never had a girlfriend who actually liked such films. Though none of them have been as savvy with the more obscure films as myself, tastes were definetly not mainstream. Perhaps I'll just gather resentment, but discussing the pacing of Bubba Ho-Tep with your lady friend is something I smile about when I hear of the poor saps being dragged to cinematic drivel for the sake of pleasing their lady friends. I'm thumbing my nose in your direction, Obeygiant.

This isn't a matter of "mainstream" vs "obscure". The Notebook was this generation's Love Story. Girls were powerless against its might.

As an example, my girlfriend's favourite movie is Road House (I totally lucked out, yo), and she still can't help it.

Hmm... Well I suppose the phenomina of The Notebook must've passed by this household entirely, as my sister, who is usually very in with the latest chick flick, or Sandra Bullock movie, hasn't mentioned anything about it.

Oh, and nothing to do with what we're talking about, but don't you just miss the good old lenthy debates we used to get into on the film board? What happened to those? Have newer posters just shorter attention spans, hence the many one line replies? I'm not saying everyone should be a Ropedrink, but the debate is certainly lacking as of late.

When talking to my girlfriend a few times, i always actually refer to Rachel McAdams as "the hot one from The Notebook"

... bet the girlfriend loves that! :v:

PS - never actually saw 'The Notebook' as looks like absolute horse*hit!

'The Notebook' goes beyond the usual chick flick. The story of the relationship is told in flashback and deals with the effect of a partners alzheimers (sp?) on relationships. It is quite sad in places :( But it is a brilliant movie.

Sounds identical to a mid-week TV3 time filler to me...

Perhaps it just affected girls of a certain age/disposition. I can imagine that years of living with you has meant that no mere weepy movie can make your sister cry.

    :D

Most threads lately have been quite dull - noone has any strong opinions, and if they do, they're too willing to let their politeness get in the way of expressing these opinions. We need less "Has anyone seen this movie? Great isn't it?" and more "ALMODOVAR IS A CVNT".

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,639 ✭✭✭Laguna

Well to make you feel better, I actually do think Almodovar's work is pure sensationalist **** and for the most part overrated.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 731 ✭✭✭Madge

I like TV3 mid-week movies.. Angelina Jolie in 'Gia' was very good, was on there a few weeks ago

Indeed, it's all been very Hank Hill's back garden, everyone nodding in agreement going "Yep" and "Uh-huh" ad nauseum. I even get the odd reported post where someone has objected to a strong opinion as it were. I would argue that the film reviews board has split the amount of discussion in half, but even then, people should have something a little more indepth to say now and again. Indeed, I'd nearly go and start another Tarantino is a Theif thread just to fire things up, but I think I've got every bit of teeth grinding hatred of that man's shameless works out of me at this stage, and quite honestly couldn't care less. Besides, I've already accussed Paul WS Anderson of plagiarism in another thread, and nobody has really risen to that, perhaps because he doesn't have any fans?

But with the sheer amount of garbage Hollywood is spewing these days, you'd think people would have something to rant about? I mean, how many painfully trite, soulless, characterless remakes do we have to put up with? Why can't hollywood produce an original movie these days? Why all the painfully dull and derivative sequels? Maybe we really need do need a controversial thread to stir things up. Feel anything welling up inside you, Obeygiant? Perhaps you can spark the fires of debate once again? Didn't you mention you weren't a fan of Oldboy? Hell, that's worthy of a good rant right there I think.

    Well here's some controversy

I thought Kill Bill (both I & II) were ****ing terrible!, Quentin Tarantino purposely set out to create a b-movie esque feel about his 'epic', in my opinion he overshot the mark, b-movies are better, his two piece turd of a movie is the most overrated piece of modern cinema to smear its effluent on the silver screen. Kill bill went beyond bad, it was pure sanctimonious drivel, Tarantino thinks everything he writes is the prose of todays society.

    That isn't controversy, that's a widely known fact. :v:

I love movie debates. I like to think I have a bit o knowledge when it comes to movies. I will probably be schooled but I'd give it a shot.

EDIT: There was a post there about a month ago "remaking bad movies" didn't seem to take off but I've been thinking about all these bad movies for ages now.

Right I'll start and Karl no offence but this is one of your recommendations. I thought Don't Look Now was the biggest pile of crap ever seen on the big/small screen. What was supposed to happen? Nothing happened in the hour and a half it was on.....nothing. I mean if there was suspense build, character build, etc but nothing. How, why, where, when? Call me stupid, ignorant, dumb but what was I supposed to be looking for in this movie. Please tell me with spoilers....please!

The Notebook looked like a pile of crap.

I liked Rachel McAdams in Mean Girls tho, that was her right?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,942 ✭✭✭missingtime

I havn't seen Dont Look Now - but I do remember watching Blizzard of Odd recently where it was mentioned that films starting with Dont, and that the majority of them were to be avoided. But Colin Murphy mentioned a few that are exceptions to the rule maybe this is one of them.

As far as the Kill Bill movies are concerned I wouldn't say they were terrible but I would say that they are overrated they didn't really "do" anything for me.

Oh and garred I totally agree with your sig.

Ah, today's youth. It seems nowadays if something isn't going a mile a minute, some people's attention spans just can't help from wandering. If you honestly think that "Nothing" happened, you probably weren't facing the right way. Maybe you were staring at the floor? Or doodling? I mean, you say there wasn't any suspense, or character building, which when we're talking about what is easily one of the deepest, most suspensefull horror films of all time, I really do question whether you watched the film at all.

I won't argue with you further, I'll just point out that in the thread Best Horror Movie Ever, this was what you posted. Yes, out of every horror film that ever existed, you thought this was the best. So unfortunately, your opinion in this matter doesn't hold much water. :v:

Yep because it had everything I want out of a horror, was'nt arty farty just a basic cheap scare, gore horror film.
Surely I'm not the only one who thought nothing happened in this film. As I say please explain to me what I was suppose to be "getting" from this film. I know its bad when you have to do this but I cannot understand how you rate it so much. Go on old man, explain to the youth, use spoilers.

There's a difference between a "strong" opinion and a "controversial" one.
Someone writing a 15-page essay on why they like Stanley Kubrick is probably going to garner more debate than someone writing one line of "Kubrick is overrated"

i liked the kill bill movies, i would agree that 1 is a throw away kind of movie if you don't like the hong kong actioner but i liked the spaghetti western feel of 2 which baffles me personally a sthey were menat to be one movie, but i guess thats just the power of editing.
i felt don't look now was agood movie, i felt it had a style to it you don't often see when tragedies happen on screen, how the people coped after it, and not big scale tragedies but big enoufgh to destroy lives or relationships, i felt for the characters as they tried to rebuild their lives yet felt guilt at forgetting heir daughter and not wanting to move on, it's the classic scenario of how do you go on when such a dramatic change hastaken place, what fills the void.

as to the remakes question, hollywood have been doing it for years. even hitchcock remade himself.(in a movie sense not a madonna sense)

So thats what it was about. Suppose if your into that in your horrors. A bit too arty for me. Give me monsters, blood, gore and cheap scares anytime.

While most of what is written there is a bit short pointless and nonsensical are the only two words needed to describe Mulholland drive without resorting to crudity.

i'd agree about don't look now, not that great imo.
i mean when did character building equal bordering on boring? they can go hand in hand....
in a totally different genre, a film that could be described as slow but still really engaging is open range starring the costner
