Neg Scanners

So, in college we get to use these nifty scanners that can scan full quality photos straight from your negatives.

Essentially you lock your negs into a plastic grid and place it in the scanner and when it scans them you can have it scan at huge resolution in normal colour.

Anyway, does anyone know how these work? Do you need a special scanner, or is it just very clever software? Any idea where/how/how much I could get it for?

    Thanks.

Built-in Transparent Materials Adaptor (TMA), scan 35 mm slides and negatives.

    Precisely! And only 112e. Goody.

This is just one of a multitude of A4 flatbed scanners that will also scan negatives and slides with the addition of an adapter. Before you jump into a purchase, do a bit of market research, and see what's available. Personally for something like this I'd go for an Epson (Perfection 3490) or a Canon (CanoScan 4200F), but pretty much every other scanner manufacturer all do similar devices.

Was what you were using at college a dedicated negative / slide scanner from someone like Nikon or Minolta? If so, much more expensive ... we're talking a minimum of about €750 for a good one.

No, no. They're just scanners...Well, they look like normal scanners, I really didn't bother checking, I was just giddy to "print" my photos. I'll be happy with a regular one I think. And of course I'll look around, now that I know what im looking for.

A dedicated neg-scanner will give you the best results. I've used flatbeds that have adaptors to allow you to scan negatives but they do not give as good results as a scanner that is designed to scan film only...

I have a Canoscan FS4000. You can scan a 35mm frame at 4000dpi/48bit, though it takes about 4mins (more expensive scanners can do the same in 20secs). That's sortof roughly equivelent to a 20 megapixel camera image size at 48bit. It also came with an adaptor for scanning APS, which was the second reason i bought it.

Like all photo equipment related to analogue neg scanners are going for good value now. I've seen the FS4000 selling for about $200+ on eBay! Minolta make good affordable scanners that should be quite cheap second hand too.
