I have an external HDD (Maxtor 300 gig) with the past year, always worked 100%, its full to the brim, only 1 gig space left.
I plugged it in this morning & the laptop makes the plug in noise fine, but its not recognizing the Hard Drive, there is nothing in My Computer either.
When i right click on My Computer for Computer Management, it is listed in there as 'Unallocated' & online.
I am using Win Xp Pro.
Somebody tell me that i am not after loosing my HDD full of information??

    Any advice people?

try connecting it to another Laptop., or take out your internal hardrive and see if it will boot up from the external one.

Sounds like the boot sector of the hard drive is messed up..

You will either need a utility to repair the boot sector or get data recovery software. The same thing happened to me, if it's not physically damaged the data can be recovered exactly how you left it. Don't go formatting or anything like that just yet..

Could be partition table as well. Try getting partition repair tools, depending on your file system used (if it's one 300gb partition, can only NTFS if running on windows).

I had a similar problem but seeing as you tried connecting it to another laptop i'm not sure this solution will work for you:

I don't know why this worked for me before but if i unplugged my laptop and pulled out the battery and left it for a few mins something in the usb controller would reset and my external hd would be recognised again. Found the answer on google, its a good solution to a common problem.

Try and see if it works?
