{Request} Dental Gum Shield

After sitting in A+E in hospital for 3 hours last night after Hockey training, I reckon it might be a good idea to get myself a gum shield. I used to have oneof those cheap 'boil in the bag' ones but it was just so damn uncomfortable so i want to get one fitted by the dentist. I was wondering does anyone know where's the best place/cheapest place in Dublin to get one. I remember a thread here that about going in to the students in Trinity and getting work done cheaply-would it be possible that they do it?

    Cheers,

    HK

I'm a college student in dublin with no car so the north isn't really an option for me. Does anyone know if its a standard price from all the dentists because i understand they all send them off to the same company.

if you register in the dental hospital at the back of trinity you can get a dental student to make it for less, they may also carry out other treatment for alot less than private dentists

there used to be a dentist up in Phibsboro in the shopping center (approx 4 years ago) who made a good one for my flat mate and not too pricy as far as I can remember

you might give him a shout, I have no idea of the name or number

and if you do let me know the price ,cos might get one of these myself... but much more necessary in hockey than soccer

    Hi Guys.

Costs of custom made gum shields vary - in our practice we have two prices: one for clear gum shields (€65) and one with custom colours (Irish Flag, Football colours etc) (€75) - they also come with a case.

I'll admit they ain't cheap but I've seen too many cases where people ended up spending a lot of money trying to fix broken teeth following a sports injury where the patient didn't wear a shield. If you play any form of contact sports, then they are money well spent!

Wow.. that was a quick reply!

I'm actually in the process of setting up a new practice near the City Centre but the builders are in at the moment - we are opening on Feb 1st. Sorry Viper!

Currently I'm working down the country until our new practice is ready.

Oh how I wish I was back in college again!!

No. Don't bother with the DIY gum shields - from talking to my own patients (who come into me for the custome shields) they ain't worth a damn! Did have one myself when I was about 13 and it kept falling out!

Providing you with a gumshield is very quick. You come in, we take a mould of your top teeth, send it off to the lab (who make the shield) - it comes back ~1 week later (depends on which lab you use) and we fit it. 99.9% of the time, they are a perfect fit and don't need any adjustment so you can just pick the shield up at reception. In rare cases, we might need to adjust the shield if it is too tight.

Best of luck with your shield :)

i have a gumshield (one of the boil in the bag ones) for playing rugby..and its from a company called shock doctor...retails at around 15 euro. They guarantee dental treatment up to 1 million euro/usd for any injuries received while wearing one...have to say it is very good...i've received any number of slaps bumps kicks in the face while playing and not broken/lost any teeth...

I contacted www.gummiegumshields.ie on behalf of the Gaelic Team I play for, there based in Navan. They came out to our clubhouse, took the mouldings and came back a week later with the gumshields. Cost was €50. I had never worn a gum shield before and was afraid it would affect my breathing but after a couple of times wearing it I was used to it and have no problems breathing. People can just drop into them, get the moulding and come back an hour later and the gumshield is ready. Check them out.
