Anyone know what the deal was with the people in hi-vis jackets at the luas stops yesterday?they were taking notes about something and I'm nosey and want to know.

Wasn't bothered asking them as I'm not very chatty coming to or from work

I was one of the many doing the survey on Thursday on the Red Line. Basically we were counting the number of people getting on and off the trams at each stop.

It's a yearly census for the RPA so they can see how many people are using the Luas. I did it last Thursday (17th) as well on the Green Line. Handy bit of money before Christmas is all I'll say

Can they not get statistics from ticket sales?

That would be too smart! Although, the tickets wont tell you where you get on and off surely.

Yeah I saw them too, I saw one girl just standing at the same luas stop for at least 4 hours counting people coming on and off

Not necessarily. I mean ticket sales only tell you so much. What if you want to see how many people are not paying. The CSO's can't be everywhere checking people's tickets. It's inevitable some will get away with it. Therefore the RPA will obivously compare the figures they got from us to the sales figures from the ticket machines and smart card readers and be able to work out the percentage of people who are fare evaders.

While the ticket itself wouldn't tell you what stop you got on at, just the zone, the ticket machine would have that sale recorded in it's memory though. But yes, neither would be able to tell what stop you got off at, just the zone

Well everyone was based at a specific stop. Though we were stretched trying to cover breaks because a number of people didn't turn up. I myself was one the people floating around covering for people so they could take breaks

I also spotted these people along the bus route in Phibsboro on Thursday...looked like they were counting road traffic?

That's a totally different thing to what I was doing. I think they're measurinf traffic flow and that. Saw the ad for it on jobs.ie. It's a 2 week thing on most of the major routes into the city centre. They were all along the N11 on Wednesday morning and I saw them in D'Olier St on Wednesday evening

Luas can't track weekly/monthly/annual users at the moment.
