Low acid red wine

This may seem strange but I can't drink red wine anymore. I used to drink Coteaux du Languedoc when I was in late teens but went off it (prob had too much  ) and didn't touch it for a few years.

A couple years ago I went to dinner with friends and had just a glass of some "fine wine". About an half hour later I felt really ill and had to "liberate" the wine from my system. Since then I tried different sorts (when offered a glass) maybe every six months but always my stomach violently protests.

I believe it's the acidity of the red wine that does this, I can have white wine no bother at all. Can this be true? Can anyone recommend a nice red wine that is reeeeally low on acid? I live close to a wellstocked offie but would rather ask for a particular wine than explain my tummy issues. It has to go with pasta and meat for that italian feel :D

I'm no connaisseur but have found Chianti to less acidic than all the other red wines I've drank. I'm sure somebody will correct me on this though.

I've found Shiraz to be more acidic than Chianti. I've never had Pinot Noir but it was the favourite wine of the lead character in Sideways so it must be good.

The amount of acid in a wine is less when the grapes are fully ripe. So to get the least acidity, if you think acid is the problem, buy a wine from a hot country. I would suggest a South African or Australian or Californian wine. A Merlot or Zinfandel would have less acid and tannins as well. I would love to know how you get on.

Have you tried rose wines or white zinfandel(?). Some of these are made from red varieties and you may be able to slowly narrow down the nasties for you. Many of these are available in either 1/4 bottles or 250 ml bottles to cut down the expense and try only a mouthful to see how it goes down.

P.S. do you have an ulcer, as for a while I could not drink larger or cider without getting sick (thankfuly thats passed) because of an ulcer.
