Chroming

Hi ,

Can anyone recommend a chromer in ireland , i have 2 small parts off a magneto i'd like to have chromed .

Whats the cost of chroming too if anyone knows ?

Have a bumper or two that need rechroming.

Was down this road myself and could not find anybody. I think there may of been some guy in Harolds Cross but I never found him.

I bought from ebay and replaced all the bumpers, depends on the car but I don't think there is anybody left doing it here but I could be wrong.

From my research in the land of Mustangs:

Getting something (re)chromed is a bad idea as the chome can be a very light layer and will start pitting quickly, you would have to ensure that the chomer is putting down a fair amount of chrome, as the parts are normally very exposed to the elements.

Most of the Mustang people say get the replacement part new.

Thats okay if you own a Mustang but an old Merc can extract serious amounts of dough from ones wallet !

There was a place in Chapelizod, Safeplate, I believe they moved the entire business to Kilkenny !! Not sure why and never looked for them. they did all my bumpers for about £400 punts 4 yeasr ago. They did a decent job with the finish just starting to fade after 4 years of outdorr daily use. The bumpers were red with rust when I gave them in, they looked totally unsalvageable to me !

The process is complicated and you need to ensure they remove any existing plating and then I think there are a few layers of other metals plated before the chrome !

The EPA make it difficult for this type of business to survive, you may have more luck going to the UK. You could always contact the Motorcycle Clubs too and see who they recommend ! Dont forget to let us know !

Herselfs brother used to work in a place in santry that did chroming amongst other things. They were on santry avenue, left from the village up the ave on the left, there's a little estate there, BIC I think is one of them. I have no idea if they did or still do work for casual passersby or just bulk stuff, but may be worth a look. I'll ask the BiL when I see him.

Could be interested myself ! Have picked up a new project car, a 1975 Stag that's pretty sound apart from needing new rear suspension, and two 50p-sized holes in the floors welded. The car is totally original so the chrome has worn a bit from polishing, sitting in the weather, etc.

If I were to go the exchange route, from the UK a rechromed exchange bumper is about €600 for the front and €813 for the rear. Ouch. And about €183 for the chrome trim on each end of the car. Plus the core charge of course, and shipping of the cores back to the UK.

Safeplate rings a bell - I was phoning around Dublin about 10 yrs ago to get some rollbars for an MX5 chromed. I think it was Safeplate that said they could do it for about £100 punts at the time (although they just quoted over the phone without see the bars, and assuming they would be much the same size as bumpers). They mentioned some charge also to dip the bars in acid to remove the current coating that was on them (powdercoating)

There is a company up there in Santry called Sanbra Fyffe and they are listed as electroplaters but I thought it was only for the computer industry !

Would that be them ?

An update, sorry about the delay. The company was called CPS but have been taking over recently and the BiL doesn't know what it's called now. They do chroming and when he worked there you could walk in off the street and get it done, he hasn't worked there in a few years so if anyone lives locally they could probably drop in and ask. It's behind the aldi on Santry avenue,previously BIC, when I was last there you couldn't miss it, a few years ago now, it had the ususally load of metal out side so it should be easy to spot.If anyone has any success they might post the details for info sake.
