Don't know where to post this, but whats the best place to pick up ornamental swords (katana's etc...). Best place in the city centre? Also, whats the deal with importing the,, like buying one on ebay, are there any laws about them, being potential weapons etc..?

I know you mean in Kildare but in Waterford there is a place called Funkit and they have all sort of gadgets like cellphones, jukeboxes, adult humor etc etc.... but they carry alot of ornamental swords and various martial art swords and knives. I think that this company have a number of shops around the country most probably in Dublin if this is any help.:(

There was a martial arts shop on capel st (at the corner with abbey st I think) that used to do them, not sure if it's still there. I think someone mentioned somewhere at the top of stephens green shopping centre too but I've never seen it myself.

edit: Ebay has lots in the UK too, at good prices. I think they're generally ok with customs, ornamental swords are made from metal alloys that can't really be sharpened. Even proper sharpened ones aren't illegal afaik, it's just illegal to carry one in public without proper reason (travelling to/from MA training/event, bringing one back from shops etc).

You could always try to contact customs to see what they say, as far as I can tell customs here falls completly under revenue (typical, it's all about how much money the government can make). Their contact page is at http://www.revenue.ie/cont_main.htm , try looking under 'Dublin Ports & Airport District' or 'Dublin Enforcement District'. If you contact them let us know what they say, I've been thinking of getting a nice Japanese Iaito.

I bought one in Bloody Tokyo, lugged the thing for 6 thousand miles or so through 2 train stations, 2 bus terminals and 3 airports only to see almost exactly the same thing in the Stephens green centre a fortnight later.

Yep both of these places have them. I can't remember the the name of the one on Abbey street but the one in Stephens Green is the tattoo/piercing place, Celestial Ring.

try posting in the martial arts section, lads there will know.

A lot of the posts have links to martial arts supplies that supply swords.

Considering im currently banned from the martial arts forum for linking to sites that sell various types of sharp and pointy items, I'd be very careful about what you choose to link to in there

    :v: < careful now!

I've ordered daggers, knives, swords and katanas from US and UK without any problems in customs. Only thing was that I had to pay custom charges from US shipments (nothing new there).
But there was no issue with getting them in.

And they are not illegal to have. It's illegal to carry them around with you but not to keep at home.

Check this place out, this is where I got my last couple of orders from.

Not too sure about places in town. I know that place upstairs in Stephens Green, but selection is not that great!
