Fried harddrive, any solutions?

Basically, i was upgrading my computer earlier and i fried my harddrive. I think i either managed to put a power cable in upside down, or i put the IDE cable in upside down... or dust got in. When i powered up after inserting the new GFX card I saw some smoke from the HD, so i pulled the power and ripped out the cables. Now the HD smells funny and won't spin.

So, now my 160gb is dead (WD Cavier SE 160gb. S/N WD1600JB-00GVA0). Is there any way to recover it? The thing ain't even spinning. I'm assuming i managed to burn out the motor or something similar, and the platters are all still ok. But i doubt that'd be fixable by swapping parts with another identical (but not broken) HD? Would it?

Would the only solution be data recovery professionals or just throw it away?

I've heard that the platters can be remounted but it would take a 'Specialist' set-up to do it. Those things are well polished and need to be removed in near on surgical conditions!

Data Recovery Specialists or bin it imo....

    What a downer though :(

The power cannot be plugged in the wrong way, thats the way they are designed so people cant plug it in the wrong way. Maybe it was just its time to die? U could try data recovery professionals, but i guess that would cost allot of money.

As far as i know, there will be a 3year warrenty on the HDD, so u should be able to send it off to Western Digital and they will send u a new one (they should have a RMA system on there website with more details).

About trying to repair it urself with another 160gb HDD, it might be possible, but i wouldnt recommend it.

    Good luck man.

Yes, you could RMA it back to WD, they will usually send you a raplacement no questions asked, as long as its still in warranty that is.
Ye, those data recovery services are very expensive.

I fried a 200gb maxtor there (don't ask me how, I just turned the computer on!). I also have a 160gb maxtor, so i just removed the pcb with those strange screws and put the pcb from the 160gb on it, and it worked! I was able to recover all of the data without any problems. Then i just rma'd the 200gb and received a new one!

The only thing I had to be careful of was that the PCB were of the same model series (Diamond MAX 9), and that was all that was too it.

Aye, i've signed up for an advance RMA, so the replacement should be here in a few days at the most. I love advance RMA's. They make so much sense. Now, i've only lost my 160GB drive, which had only 130GB of stuff on it. Thankfully thats the drive i keep everythng backed up, so at most i've lost a weeks work. (I completed a round of backups last week after not doing it for two months :P. So i'm kinda lucky about that i suppose).

Roll on replacement HD. I might tie it in with a format and reinstall aswell.
