Shame, but make sure you prepare the timber properly, removing the varnish and providing sufficient grip for the gloss to grip properly.

Realise you will have to paint it more frequently, due to obvious scratches, etc.

As Victor has already pointed out, it is essential to provide good adhesion between the bannister surface and the new gloss paint.

It is not absolutely necessary to remove all the varnish, so long as you scuff the surface with 120-150 grit sandapaper, and remove the glossy shine from the varnish, this should be sufficient.
    Happy painting.

You would need atleast 3 undercoats for a dark stairs plus some polyfilling inbetween coats and then a coat of gloss.

    Goodluck with it.

Hmmm, I would say that if it is white gloss, it is quite tasteless looking and will possibly look like something from the 1970's. On the other hand, something with less of a sheen, particularly satin would look quite well.

did you consider painting the walls a brighter colour....it'll be a lot less hassle...also, try putting a large mirror in the hall to reflect the light.

I'm just thinking (rare I know). Leave the handrail as is (its the bit that gets the most abuse) and paint the rest.

I saw this recently, in a beautiful homes type mag. It looked really well, dark wooden hand rail and a custard colored (ish) gloss on the spindles.
