I'm looking for a hotel or hostel recommendation for a double bed room. Has anyone been there and have good or bad stories? I'm aiming to be as close as possible to the ramblers and not sure If I have the money for a hotel but don't want to end up in a dive of a hostel either :) any recommendations?

just go to the tourist office(its hidden under a big square at the top o the main street) they gave us a 3 a4 list of hostels around with prices, most are lovely to stay in and dirt cheap, mid summer we paid round 12 a night

I'm thinking of going sometime soon too...
    check out
http://www.sleep4star-pay3star.com/ for reduced price "expensive" hotels...

TBH I'm probably going to aim for nearer 50-60 euro a night for a room for 2... tripadvisor is the usual good spot to check for decent places

Anyway my general question is, how much is life in Barcelona?
Meals out, drinking in pubs, drinking in clubs ?

http://www.barcelonaconnect.com <-- seems like a good site too

Hostelworld are good too. Don't eat or drink anywhere on the Las Ramblas. Most restaurants, at least the ones with people outside attempting to goad you in, are tourist-traps (got charged €7.20 for a glass of Sangría before). Beer is cheap there too, San Miguel or Mahou are popular brands.
