Ranieri for Ireland?

Speculation as to who may be appointed as new Republic of Ireland manager has moved on from Kevin Keegan and Terry Venables with the latest name touted being former Chelsea boss, Italian, Claudio Ranieri.

soccercentral has been informed by a normally reliable source that Ranieri, who managed Damien Duff at Stamford Bridge, may now be the favoured candidate of the FAI for the position formerly held by Brian Kerr.

While the FAI are unlikely to comment, and have stated they wouldn't enter into speculation, our source has indicated that they may be about to enter discussions with Ranieri in the coming days.

It is unlikely that any face to face meeting would take place in Ireland as Ranieri would be a very visible face through any Irish airport. Our source understand s that the FAI would travel to a secret location somewhere in England, possibly as early as this Thursday.

Meanwhile, the possibility of his appointment has appears to have reached the bookies with his price falling from 25/1 on Monday to 12/1 on Tuesday afternoon with gamebookers.ie, though of course it could just be more idle specualtion on the part of punters hoping to make a few bob on someone who was at a long price.

soccercentral cannot stand over the veractity of the sources claim but it would be an interesting appointment should it come to pass.

It's not April First is it?

I dont think he's the right man for the job althoug he would have less players to tinker with in the Irish setup..

I think it would be an interesting appointment, I thought he was hard done by at Chelsea..
Has tons of experience, I'd back him ahead of Terry Veg anyday..
Surely he will go back into club mgt??

A better option than Venables or Keegan I'd say.

I bet Raineri can speak better English than you can speak Spanish/Italian!!!

Ranieri is definitely not the right man as he doesnt have the experience of working with what he has got and not having the ability to sign players. We need someone with experience of working under a tight budget.

budget does not come into International management ... we need a man who can get the most out of a mediocre player base ... I would prefer ranieri over venables in this regard ...

This is exactly my point. Ranieri has always had a decent budget to work with allowing him to sign players if things werent going his way. A manager with experience of working with a tight budget couldnt just go out and sign a player and would instead have to focus on getting the best out of the players that he already has at his disposal.

    yeah perhaps you're right ....... ...

Ranieri done pretty well with Chelsea before Abramovich came into the frame. In fact he secured them a vital Champions League place which would have played a big part in Abramovich buying Chelsea. Lets not forget how well he done in his first spell at Valencia.

Yes but in both cases (even despite Chelseas debt at the time) he was able to buy in players that he wanted. Anyway I just dont think that he would be suited to managing Ireland. Club management would be more his thing

You could say that about most managers. Ranieri would definately be a better option than either Keegan or Venables.

I whole heartedly agree about Venables. After what he did at Leeds I dont want him anywhere near the job

I think Raneiri would be a good appointment.....even if it was for the hilarity of watching him try and say something in Irish in his first press conference :)

Ranieri isnt a bad managere at all but he wouldnt be right for this job. He wouldnt know any of the players and especially any of the younger lads coming through which is exactly what we need at this moment in time
