Is this being petty?

An employee I manage gave me two weeks notices and today is his official final day. It was his choice to do two weeks, one week would have been fine with me. Last Thursday I asked him if he wanted to finish on Monday or Tuesday of this week. I could see he seemed confused by that and I realized that he thought he was finishing up Friday. He had an opportunity to say something but didn't and instead said Tuesday. On Friday he told me he would be late Monday and Tuesday and would use a half days vacation for it. I said fine. He never turned up yesterday(Monday) and my guess is if he turns up today(Tuesday) it will be to hand his key in.

I'm not too worried about him not turning up. What annoys me is that I worked with HR last week to push this weeks hours into last week so he could get his final check quicker. Monday and Tuesday were supposed to be work days and as of now he will get paid for them. He is owed three days vacation. One part of me says let it go. The other says he tried to screw the system and I should inform HR and make sure he only gets paid for 1 days vacation. I am new to this management stuff and this is the first time I am faced with the process of an employee leaving. I liked the guy and all but all he had to do was speak up and I would have taken care of the situation.

I'd make sure he only gets paid for the one day vacation. He is taking the piss, he didn't even bother to ring in with some form of excuse.

I'll preface this by saying I'm not a manager, yet......

It depends on whether or not he'll be speaking to people you currently manage again. If you think he will be, then I think you'd be better off making sure he only gets one day of pay. Otherwise you may have people walking on you.

I think not showing up and not giving notice is the height of ignorance myself. I know you're in the US...maybe it's more commonplace there.

One thing's for sure...you're not being petty.

I'd 2nd that. He's taking the mick. Of course, could be some kind of emergency so best find out before you dock him his holidays.

Thanks for the replies. I will be following up with him to see why he wasn't in before I do anything. And I don't think its common place here in the states to do this. I am trying to build a flexible working environment for my team, flexible hours and some remote working. We are all supposed to be professionals which is how I expect everybody to act and as long as they do then I am very flexible. Of course there is always someone who will take advantage.

There is. Sometimes things situations like this can be because of genuine reasons though. Following it up is a good idea.

 Because as a manager he's been tasked with helping to run the company?

You should inform HR and let them deal with it.

He'll care when the MD finds out and blasts him for not sorting out.

To the OP, you are not being petty, he didn't work so he's only owed the 1 holiday pay.

He might however come back with a doctor's note claiming to be sick.
Or if your company has a 2 day sick leave rule where you don't require one, he may play this card. I'd discuss it HR, they'll be more up to date with the ins and outs.

Meh. He didn't ring in sick, and he didn't ask for the day off, so don't pay him for it, or others may do it, and expect you to pay.

Its been dealt with. I informed HR to only give him 1 days vacation and deduct the other two for not turning up.

For the people who asked why I care I have two reasons.

One, its unprofessional. I have worked hard to build a casual environment and I have done battle to provide my team with what they need. Even though I want a casual environment I have always made it clear to my guys that we are professionals and we should always conduct ourselves as such with internal management or external clients.

Secondly and this may seem small but it comes out of my budget. He would essentially get paid for two days he didn't work and that comes out of my departments pocket. We are a small company and I have to keep a tight reign on expenses.
