    hey folks,

as it stands, my hdd is rapidly filling with dvd rips [legit obviously].

Atm I've no real reason to divx them to x_hundred meg file sizes but with each dvd averaging at around 7gigs each rip, I'm looking for something to compress them down to around 1.5-2gigs.

A friend was telling me about monkey lossless compression but I can only find details on audio LC, not video.

I keep them as full rips as it takes less time than divx_ing them and I get the full quality.

any ideas on what sw/codecs to use would be much appreciated.

If your watching them just on your PC have a look at ratdvd
    Keeps the menus too.
    Monkey lossless is audio only.
Otherwise use XviD/Mp3 (freeware) or Nerodigital (Nero Recode)

yeah i recommend ratdvd aswell, its quality, got batman begins 1.5gb and u can use ratdvd like a codec kinda to watch it on the pc, if u wanna put it on a dvd then ratdvd converts it back to dvd, batman begins ended up being 4.6gb!
    works well! check it out

the_edge - have u any good links to find ratdvd movies?

xvid / divx / mp4 ing them is probably the best way to get the kind of compression you're looking for but still keeping quality. AutoGK is a useful xvid tool and you can specify (attempting) perfect reproduction of the original. This will probably end up at around the 1.5GB per dvd mark.

That ratdvd thing looks interesting too.
