Have a Dell Inspirion 9300 and at the moment have one dimm of 512 mb ram,

I want to upgrade but not sure what to up grade to.

If I upgrade with a 1 gig dimm do I lose out on the fact the dimms arent matched.

What I want to know is that whcih will preform better

    A 512mb + 1gb ram

    or 2 X 512mb?

It depends on what you use it for really. I dont know if laptops use dual ddr technology, I would doubt it'll make a difference as they wont be the same brand anyway.

1gb ram is fine for pretty much everything imho. For €50, the 512mb is a worthwhile upgrade imho :) Although shop4memory have the 1gb on special offer for €102, so splash out if you want :)

Obviously 512+1 GB will perform better if you run memory intensive programs, but if not you won't see any difference. Well, that was obvious. Now, about different memory. Whatever you decide to do try to buy a new memory that runs at the same or higher speed that the one you already have. If you put together slow and fast sticks, they both will run at speed that both stick support, i.e. slower. You don't have much choice here:
    - standard SDRAM - old, not in use anymore, runs at 133 Mhz, marked as PC100
    - DDR - up to 400 MHz as PC333
    - DDR2 - everything above.
    That's basically what's in use.

Whether you need 512+1 GB or 2x512? I'd say you'd be ok with 2x512 because if you needed more than that you'd definitely know that.

I've only just got into games on the laptop. The graphics card isnt great (ATI X300 thinking of upgrading to 6800) and was told that extra RAM would do the game playing experience some good.

At the moment I'm only really playing Half Life 2 and it runs grand but the extra ram might help.

When I finsh that I want to get Battelfield 2 (i'll download the demo and see how that runs) so I know that the xtra ram there will do!

Other wise I jusr burn DVDs and all the other kind of computer usage (some AutoCad work as well).

Best place to get ram is
    www.pcmu.co.uk

Its based out in celbridge. Can collect it or they'll post for free.

Dell wont sell extra gfx cards. You'd have to get them your self.

As for upgrading gfx on the 9300 have a look athttp://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=113866

    its very good.

Well, there you go, I said if you needed more RAM you'd know. :D
And, btw, Autocad wants a lot of RAM, too.
