    Hey,
I've a PC here and a laptop, both with network cards.

PC is running XP, laptop Win2K

My modem only has one ethernet port but I've a wireless router here I could never get working but it's got a 4 port switch on it (http://www.cnet.com.tw/product/cnbr-914w.htm).

I've tried connecting the two PCs with a cross over cable but that didn't work for some reason.

Anyone know if I can use this router to connect the two and supply a net connection between them?

My modem is a ZyXel Prestige 600 Series btw

On the XP machine you will need to run the network setup wizard. Also, make sure the workgroup name is "WORKGROUP" which is the default of win2k rather than "MSHOME" (default on xp).

Your switch/router should have a DHCP server for assigning ip address' automatically.
To set-up your computer up to receive your ip address automatically go to start, settings, network connections. Right click on the local area connection. Then select Internet protocol (TCP/IP) and click properties. Select obtain ip address automatically. Restart your machine and now try connecting...
