Anybody ever get penalty points on a ZV plate from camera/hand held "gun".

I never had which strikes me a strange as I most definitely have been perhaps +5 or +10 when I have "seen" by a camera. perhaps my mph speed is over generous !

It's likely that your speedo is over generous. Most cars (not just classics) have speedos that overread by a few mph or around 10%.

Even if your displayed speed was spot on there is probably some leeway with the Gardai due to accuracy of their equipment and maybe reluctance of individual Gardai to pull drivers over who are slightly over the limit.

Finally perhaps some gardai have never seen a ZV plate, don't know what it is etc. Might think it was a foreign reg or something :) and not bother pulling you over unless you were breaking the limit by a big margin.

I got lucky yesterday driving under the underpass at UCD. Was enjoying the sound of some high revs doing about 55mph when a Garda bike cruised past me and paid no attention to the racket.

Don't know what is in kph but it used to be a ridiculous 40mph zone.

I would imagine those cameras have a hard time with irregular plates. I read in the Sunday Times yesterday they're clamping down in the UK because the cameras can't read italic plates and the like. (Watch out Donegal if they clamp down here :D).

I was gunned on the cavan bypass doing between 75 & 80 (I think it's a 60 zone) but I was overtaking an artic on a dual carriageway so perhaps the Garda cut me some slack. My understanding is that the Garda has to stop you to give you points, unless it's a fixed speed camera.

My car has a 72D reg instead of ZV.

I once wound the Fiat 850 up to 78mph (yes thats flat out!) on the Athlone bypass, reckoned I'd get off on an insanity plea if I was caught;)

What tyres do you have? If they're not the same spec as original your speedo will be out too.

Mine are same-as-original 185R15s. Top whack in my car was an indicated 170kph (106mph), but I reckon it was closer to the car's stated top speed of 98mph.

Replaced the tyes coupe of mths ago. Got factory standard ones from the UK so shouldn't impact.

Never taken it over 100 as I'd feel sorry for it but I think the top is 116.

Hopefully no points on the way. I think there is something in the ZV plate that helps avoid points but its just a feeling
