i was working in limerick city last week and saw a guy get knocked down by a car.
to my amazment nobody went over to see the guy was ok.
is it fear of getting involved or nobody cares anymore about people in genrel.
i went to ask him was he ok after a slight pause of waiting to see if a local would go to his aid.
it turns out he was drinking heavly that day and was not hurt
the driver of the car when i told her that the guy was drunk she automaticly blamed him even though i saw the incedent myself and it was her fault completly.

You kinda answered it yourself - why did you wait?
In the case of an accident - why should a "local" be the first to respond?!

There's a term for this apathy...always gets mentioned in threads on this topic.
It basically comes down to the fact that the more people there are in the vicinity of an event where someone needs assistance, the less likely any one particular person is to be the first to offer that assistance.

Exactly... the 'someone elses problem' mentality. OP, next time something like that happens, break the cycle and help them out.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bystander_effect
The bystander effect (also known as bystander apathy) is a psychological phenomenon where persons are less likely to intervene in an emergency situation when others are present than when they are alone. The antonym of the term is civil courage.

Aye. but after a period of time - "2 minutes" is rarely what it claims..

I meant on impulse rather than thinking about it and then perhaps intervening.

Because I'm well aware of what morons the general public can be, I'd always try to help in a situation like that. A couple of years ago, I saw a guy come off his motorbike into a lamppost in Rathmines (at a busy time of the day, lots of people around), and before he'd even hit the ground, I had my phone in my hand to call 999.

I remember being actually surprised a few minutes later when I heard that a couple of other people had also called an ambulance.
