Question on ghosting my home machine

Maybe someone might have experience with this. A friend of mine mentioned that if I take an image of my machine, wipe the drive, then restore the image, the computer will speed up as if it were a new install. He said that the whole drive becomes defragged when imaged, which speeds it up. I can see the defragging thing, but would it speed my machine up?

Not by any real amount no. Why not just defrag it as is?

That's what I thought. I defrag reasonably regularly but I'm just trying to avoid having to rebuild my machine. I'll inevitably have to do it anyway as it's just getting slower and slower.

    Thanks

I usually reload my machines every 6-9 months to clear out all the rubbish.

scandisk+defrag (For best results: use a 3rd party (Non-MS) defrag. tool)
Keep AV and anti-spyware installed and up-to-date.
Cut down on the amount of crap you install (Hypocrite:p) - and when this fails - use the uninstall facilities and go through MSCONFIG,et al to trim the amount of stuff that automatically starts when Windows does.
