Recoding Audio on to my Laptop

Hope some one can elp me with this. I am trying to record the audio from my Digibox on to my Laptop. I am using a lead which plugs into the yellow and red coloured sockets at the back of the box. This then plugs into the microphone jack on my laptop. I am using the software for my creative Labs MP3 player to record with. However when U play the sound back its sounds like I have recored it with a tape player in the next room. The sound is all over the plac with whistles and squeaks. Any suggestions

It's a mic-in port -the quality is always rather ****. What you want in a Line-in (Check the manual or get an external soundcard with SPDIF / line-in,etc.)

Most laptops have a line in. Is there another socket bar the mike and headphones one?

No Line-in. [It may be worth checking on the Compaq's website as well]
Heh.It was once a standard feature..
You'll need an external soundcard to get the suitable quality (ex: http://www.soundblaster.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=206&product=10702 -just an example,there are a dozen alternatives)
