I can no longer use the CD Drive in my compaq laptop. It doesnt show up in Windows. Its very annoying because i cant load up software and if i ever want to re-install Windows i cant do that either. Has anyone any idea what the problem might be? Tia

Did you check the bios that its bein recognized on boot up?
Have you updated your firmware recently or installed something that may be the problem?

What's the spare part number for the drive? - I've a graveyard of compaq laptops at work so I'll sort you out with a freebie if it's a hardware fault.

Have you put a sony CD in it recently ?

to early to say if software or hardware

    which compaq ?
which windows ? 95/98 often dropped the CD

if you have an NT / 98 /2K /XP CD try booting from it
if that not work go into the BIOS and set it up so it boots from cd - also chek the cd is bootable on another PC,

Restore the BIOS defaults (And possibly take the added step of removing all additional hardware first).. if it's still not there = hardware fault.

Restored the bios defaults and now i can't even get into windows at all:confused: The Windows Xp loading screen comes up and just as it looks like its going to load the Blue Screen of death comes up for a split second and then its goes back to the Compaq start screen. At least i could use the the Laptop before now its tubed:confused:

Yep its well and truely tubed now.Just won't go into Windows at all and with the CD Drive not working i cant even re-install windows. Can you even get replacement drives for Laptops? I should have left well enough alone and stick with the USB CD Drive i was using.

Does it crash if you enter Safe Mode?
Did you remove all additional hardware?

    Have you ever added RAM?

In BIOS can you boot from USB?

If Yes then load your cd into your usb drive and try that.

Well failing all else replace the cd drive. If Gil_Dub can't sort you out just one on-line. Here's one for $138 but you might find cheaper http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Compaq,Laptop,Part,311954001.aspx

You could also get in contact with www.hp.co.uk and see if they'll sell you a replacement cd-rom. Looks like thats whats needed to solve all your problems
