It's not great no, it's only DDR memory (all the new ones use GDDR3) and it's AGP (obviously unavoidable if you've still got an AGP slot). Have a look at Komplett.ie, they've got a great selection of high end AGP cards.

Should have mentioned that I am on a stupidly tight buget .

What exactly would you equate this card to ?

    Thanks

I'll put it this way, it'd be a step down from your 9800 pro. What's your exact budget in euro and I'll find something better.

€150 , so I guess it's back to the second hand market for me .

The 128mb X700 Pro costs €150 and you'd notice a huge difference in performance to what you've currently got as it's GDDR3 and has more pixel pipelines than the 9800 (I think the 9800 has 4 or 6; I can't remember).

However, if you can stretch to €175, get the 256mb version of the same card, having double the memory, it'll keep everything chugging along nicely, whilst being able to render the latest games exceptionally well.

    Thanks for that :)

This model is cheaper, I got it and on the box it says GDDR2, not GDDR3 but 50 euro cheaper.:) http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=311605&view=detailed

i dont think it is worth the upgrade the x700 is quicker but not by too much comparing specs:
    x700 pro: 8 pixel pipeline 6 vertex shaders core 425 memory 860.
    9800 Pro: 8 pixel pipeline 4 vertex shaders core 380 memory 720.
So it is not that much of an upgrade for your €150

An X700Pro is just as fast as a 9800Pro.

You will need to spend more or go seond hand if you want a decent jump in performance.

At the one linked by kevin irving the specs are core 400 and memory 532 which would not be really an upgrade to a 9800 pro

try go 2nd hand and pick up a 6600gt or x800

Or upgrade another part of your system, like add more ram etc.

jonski, i'd recommend holding out with your 9800 pro for a few months, you could put your money into upgrading your mobo to a pci-express board and get a new graphics card. thats what i'm doing, with the new x1800 out, there will be a flood of second hand x850 cards on the market. An agp card is dead money, so dont spend too much money on one.

I think this is actually the best thing about this board . Someone looks for advice , and loads come in giving it , giving links , giving other options , debating the different methods and options , so you not only get the answer but you come away wiser aswell :)

Thanks guys and keep it going , I still have a ways to go .

That 6800 Asus GFX card was a good little upgrade, 12 Pipes VS 8 pipes on your 9800. It kicks its all, I got a 6800 now and its alot faster. And for that price, you can't argue.

The 6800 is a by far better card then the X700 Pro... DDR with 22GB/s Memory bandwitdth 256-Bit .. Is pretty good. 12 pipes VS 8 also on the X700.

Get the 6800 over the X700 anyday, know a few people with X700's, Barely any difference between it and the 9800Pro.

    dont buy that card :D
check what cards your motherboard can take
    can you take pci-express?
if not make sure what type of agp slot you have, is it agp x4 or agpx8
check out www.komplett.ie they have fair prices and are reliable, if u buy from them dont use the gls option for delivery. chose an post or if u want to pay extra (which u dont :D) chose dhl
have a look at the ati cards (on komplett theyre saphire)
dont 4get u only get what u pay for when it comes to graphics cards, get a 256mb card at least and 100 euro for a card means its sh-it, out of date or both :D

So a Geforce 6200 256MB PCI-E for £50 is going to be rubbish?

The card in your fist post will be a decent step up from a 9800 Pro, and it's a good price too. I've no idea what Laguna is talking about saying that it wouldn't be. It's a much better card than the 9800 Pro.

I don't know what you're talking about, replacing an AGP card with another AGP card with minor improvements, why bother?, why not upgrade to a PCI-E mainboard and get a new PCI-E card, why bother throwing money at a dead format in AGP?, why not just throw the money out of the window of a moving car?

It's not the amount of MB a card has which dictates its quality, it's the actual chipset of the card itself. That's how some graphics card companies catch people who might not know a lot about graphics cards, by slapping 256mb on the box, people assume it's comparable to any 256mb card, even the high spec ones!

I'll put it this way, it'd be a step down from your 9800 pro. What's your exact budget in euro and I'll find something better.

The 6800 in his original post is definitely faster than the 9800 pro. No doubt about it, most likely faster in every possible benchmark, and by a good bit too. The AGP 6800s tend to be unlockable to 6800 GTs aswell, making them even better value.

You even recommend the X700 Pro 256meg to him instead, the 6800 he asked about is not only cheaper, but also a fair bit faster than the X700 pro in everything.

I'd hardly liken buying an AGP 6800 for €150 to throwing your money out of the window of a car. AGP cards are pretty much always cheaper than equivalent PCI-E cards, and they have the added bonus for him of not needing a new motherboard, which depending on his current config might involve a new power supply, processor and ram.

People always just say "RUN AWAY FROM AGP ALL YOUR CURRENT GEAR IS GOING TO EXPLODE!!!11" but I think it's just an easy way out of giving the advice someone asked for. AGP still has a pretty viable path all the way up to the X850XT, which is a pretty damn fast card. And, for people looking for a bargain, cards like the 6800LE and plain 6800 are cheap and have massive overclocking potential.

The 9800Pro has 8 pixel pipelines by the way, 6600GT has 8 aswell, so does the X700 Pro, 6800 has 12, 6800GT has 16. Just for comparison.

You're guaranteed to be disappointed if you go from the 9800 pro to an x700, just look at any benchmarks on the net.

AGP cards are now becoming more expensive than PCI-E, witness the price of an AGP 6800GT being more than a 7800GT. As stock goes down, i'm sure the prices will increase as well.

They aint minor imporvements they pretty major TBH. THE 6800architecture is world ahead of the 9800one.
